As a Homeless Outreach Specialist, you will collaborate with citizens, families, police, and other agencies to locate and assist the homeless population in an assigned area within Marin County. Your role will involve providing peer counseling and coaching services to engage clients and connect them with essential community resources.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Engage and build relationships with homeless individuals, offering coaching support and linking them to social and emotional support resources.
- Conduct basic assessments of clients' situations and behaviors to determine the best possible outcomes for individuals.
- Utilize your knowledge and access community resources on behalf of clients.
- Collect data and maintain accurate clinical charts.
- Assist clients in distress, de-escalate situations, and provide follow-up services.
- Offer crisis intervention, welfare checks, and conflict resolution as needed.
- Provide transportation to clients for appointments.
- Handle caseloads as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Attend regular staff and support group meetings as assigned.
- Complete all paperwork accurately and within specified timelines.
- Represent the Outreach Program at various agencies and community meetings.
- Utilize your personal experience as a mental health client to work effectively with individuals facing chronic mental illness and substance abuse challenges. Serve as a role model and appropriately self-disclose your mental health history when relevant.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Familiarity with concepts of Peer Supported Recovery or willingness to undergo training in this area within two years.
- Lived experience in mental health, substance use recovery, homelessness, or justice involvement is a plus.
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record and insurability under Community Action Marin's automobile insurance policy.
- Strong communication skills and ability to connect with a diverse population.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with local police and citizens.
- Understanding of personal boundaries and the ability to exercise appropriate independent judgment.
- Ability to work as part of a team while maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
- Deep understanding of and ability to articulate the role of equity, inclusion, and diversity in our work.
