Job description
Parks & Forestry (May-October)
Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks independently or as a team member. Tasks involve the maintenance, repair, and construction of parks, trails, buildings, horticulture, and arboriculture using equipment designed for recreation and city facilities.
Plymouth Ice Center (November-April)
Perform a wide variety of corrective and preventative maintenance and repair for ice arena facility and equipment under little or no supervision. Tasks involve the cleaning, maintenance and repair of ice arena surfaces, facilities and equipment.
Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
Interact with city staff, contractors, and general public in a manner that is professional and inspires open communication; professionally respond to inquiries, requests and complaints- Help to create and maintain a respectful workplace culture and champion diversity and inclusion.
- Participate in citywide training designed to strengthen competencies in areas such as communications, leadership, decision-making and problem solving.
- Constructively exchange information with city staff and managers; keep immediate supervisor promptly informed of developments in areas of accountability to foster coordinated program efforts
Infrastructure - Forestry
Perform semi-skilled and technical tree maintenance including pruning, removal, and planting of trees in public right-of-way and on city-maintained properties.
- Perform applications of chemicals on trees, invasive and other plant materials.
- Properly identify tree diseases, hazards, and infestations
- Assist in reforestation program including the determination of planting locations, installation and maintenance of plants in accordance with industry best practice standards.
- Perform routine trail and boulevard trimming to assure safety.
Perform winter maintenance.
- Plow, sweep, shovel, and flood ice rinks
- Remove snow from trails, walks, parking lots and streets using but not limited to shovels, blowers, plows, and larger equipment.
Conduct inspections and perform repairs of facilities and amenities.
- Perform scheduled inspections and maintenance on bridges, boardwalks, playground, beaches, hard surface courts, retaining walls, trails, park buildings and other park amenities.
- Inspect and repair play areas.
Prepare athletic fields.
- Layout and paint field lines
- Drag and prepare infield and pitching mounds.
- Install and inspect goals and nets.
Perform assigned duties at special events for the City of Plymouth
- Plan for the event including equipment and supply acquisition, site preparation and other duties.
- Provide event support as duties become apparent.
- Dismantle site and event equipment and supplies.
Proficiently operates motorized equipment as required to accomplish assigned duties.
- Perform daily or routine maintenance on the various assigned equipment.
- Reports all equipment damage or accidents immediately in writing.
Plymouth Ice Center (PIC)
Complete routine maintenance and cleaning of Plymouth Ice Center
- Perform minor repairs and coordinate items requiring major repair; fix doors, shelves, faucets, toilets, drains, pumps and performs other minor carpentry work
- Sweep, mop and vacuum as required; clean and disinfect all bathrooms; clean outdoor dumpster area; complete trash pick-up, disposal and proper recycling.
- Maintain building inventory and develop a protocol for cleaning, preventive maintenance reports, and routine inspections. Provide maintenance solutions to Plymouth Ice Center manager or supervisor
Prepare and maintain all ice surfaces within the facility
- Operate ice resurfacer to achieve high quality, consistent skating surface; edge, shave, and resurface ice as needed for best facility operation
- Maintain ice resurfacer to ensure consistent machine operation
- Assist in rink layout and painting of lines, and arena surfaces
- Perform general attendant duties and provides support during special events; collect fees, answer questions about ice/skate rentals, sharpen skates and answer phones
- Help with concession set-up, cleaning, inventories and sales
- Help enforce rules, regulations and disciplinary action programs
- Assist in training; give work direction to temporary part-time arena staff to ensure efficient facility operation
Perform exterior maintenance
- Remove snow and ice from entryways, stairs, and walkways
- Monitor contractual outdoor mowing
- Maintain and makes changes to exterior signs
- Monitors Plymouth Ice Center parking lot for maintenance and repair
Operate arena refrigeration systems according to seasonal, event/activity needs, and make minor repairs to HVAC system
- Identify faulty equipment, plumbing, electrical, elevator, roofs and furnishings and repairs
- Monitors systems daily to assure consistent conditions
- Maintains water treatment program for evaporation condenser
- Maintains batteries on resurfacer and other battery operated equipment
- Maintain records on time, date and item repair using the appropriate software
Assist with operating and testing of emergency generators and transfer switches
Responsible for building security, including opening and closing procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Must have six months building, grounds, arboriculture and/or urban forestry maintenance experience or equivalent.- One year of ice maintenance experience

- Availability to work overtime and/or varying shifts to meet public service needs, including late evenings, early mornings, weekends and holidays
- Must have knowledge of the tools, methods and materials used in general maintenance work.
- Must have basic technology skills and have the aptitude to learn inspection and other parks and forestry applications.

Desired Qualifications
- Two years of ice maintenance experience
- One year experience related to arboriculture and/or urban forestry maintenance.
- Working knowledge of tree anatomy and biology; materials, equipment and methods used to plant and maintain trees; OSHA and ANSI safety standards for tree work.
- Six months experience in tree felling using chain saws.
- Ability to operate any and all types of parks, forestry and or asphalt maintenance equipment and hand tools (including sprayer, hedge trimmer, chain saw, forestry mower, sod cutter, field groomer, aerial bucket truck, woodchipper, log loader, pick-up truck, one-tone dump trucks, front end loader, Toolcat, backhoe, skid loader, roller, patching equipment and/or plow truck).
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, schematics, instruction manuals, blueprints related to the development and maintenance of gardens, park structures, trails and athletic play surfaces.
- Must have mechanical aptitude to perform routine maintenance on equipment.
