COMPENSATION:
$163,877 - 245,816 annually (Plus Management Incentive Plan)

JOB SUMMARY:
The Pharmacy Manager manages the distributive and clinical processes that contribute to the provision of safe and effective pharmaceutical care in the Medical Center. He/she assures the accurate and efficient purchase, receipt, storage, compounding, distribution, and disposal of pharmaceuticals within the facility. The manager manages the Technician Supervisor, the Clinical Coordinator and Pharmacist staff working to assure patient safety of all processes. He/she provides day-to-day oversight of workload and staffing issues regarding the technicians, intern pharmacists, and the Pharmacists.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Require graduation from an accredited school of Pharmacy with Pharm.D. degree. Must be a licensed pharmacist by the California State Board of Pharmacy, in good standing. Prefer completion of an ASHP accredited residency program or equivalent including work experience.
EXPERIENCE
Experience as PIC (Pharmacist in Charge), sterile compounding, controlled substance management, automated dispense cabinet, and electronic health systems as well as experience and/or in-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements for hospital Pharmacy, staff scheduling, payroll, and management is strongly preferred.
LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
Licensure as a pharmacist in the state of California required.
PREREQUISITE SKILLS
- Current knowledge of drugs, their composition, actions, uses, toxic effect, dosage, availability and distribution.
- Ability to prepare sterile solutions.
- Familiarity with Federal and State laws regulating the profession of pharmacy and handling of drugs.
- Superior ability to work tactfully with patients, public, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team, and skillfully manages daily workflow and personnel.
- Ability to demonstrate initiative, and problem identification and solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal skills for teaching, presentations and persuasion.
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
- Knowledge of pathophysiology and disease states required to evaluate complex therapeutic issues and to monitor and advise on drug therapy.
- Ability to lead a team of peers, evaluate staffing needs, and facilitate problem-solving.
- Ability to mentor other team members.
- Knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements, particularly those involving controlled substance accountability.
- Knowledge of pharmacy computer systems preferred.
- Knowledge of PYXIS Medstations preferred.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages the provision of distributive services consistent with patient focused pharmaceutical care.
- Works with the Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator to enforce the closed drug formulary, evaluating use and need while suggesting alternatives and promoting cost-effective drug therapy.
- Participates in the instruction and supervision of intern pharmacists.
- Engages in regular, continuous decision-making, impacting people, costs and quality of service.
- Participates in the identification and establishment of programs and procedures that ensure efficient drug delivery.
- Complies with applicable laws, regulations and standards of practice.
- Promotes a positive, supportive environment within the department and Medical Center by demonstrating a pleasant and helpful attitude.
- Oversees and participates in drug distribution process in inpatient, outpatient and IV additive areas of the pharmacy.
- Attends staff meetings, contributing to meeting agendas, discussions and problem resolution.
- Contributes, via presentation, to the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee.
- Directs workflow, including technical, billing and distributive functions.
- Executes responsibilities within the established guidelines of Medical Center and departmental policy & procedures.
- Participates in department projects or committees.
- Participates in Medical Center committees as assigned.
- Ensures collection and assembly of departmental quality assurance data relating to drug distribution.
- Participates in the development and execution of drug utilization reviews in cooperation with the Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator.
- Identifies needs and provides education to pharmacy staff and other departments via informal and formal methods, such as in services and newsletters.
- Regular attendance at interdisciplinary patient care meetings, and other applicable meetings, committees, etc., as assigned.
- Coordinate daily activities of all Pharmacy areas including any day-to-day redistribution of staff.
- Work with Pharmacy Administrative Assistant and Lead Technician to resolve any scheduling issues.
- Responsible for day-to-day operation of the automated drug cabinet systems.
- Accountable for controlled substance inventory and record keeping in conjunction with Lead Technician.
- Coordinate training/orientation program for all new technicians and intern pharmacists.
- Manages the duties and responsibilities of the pharmacy technicians, intern pharmacists, and the pharmacy buyer including their annual performance evaluation following approval by the Director of Pharmacy.
- Chair Staff meetings in Director’s absence as assigned.
- Assist with policy interpretation, resolution of conflicts with MDs, and makes emergency decisions.
- Promote teamwork between and among all Pharmacy areas.
- Commitment to concept of delegation and team leadership of staff.
- Commitment to participation in transformation of work processes at Marin Health Medical Center.

Employees in this position have access to protected health information. The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographics, date of service, insurance/billing, medical record summary information, and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.
