JOB SUMMARY:
The phlebotomist is as an integral member of the laboratory by performing venipuncture and clerical tasks. The phlebotomist must demonstrate knowledge of test requirements, equipment and computers. Maintains a professional appearance, courteous to guests and team and communicate effectively. Recognizes problems; follows safety guidelines; assists with training of phlebotomy and information systems. Performs other related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform venipuncture and capillary collections
- Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities to use Sunquest lab and Collection manager
- Demonstrate proper collection of Chain of Custody Urine Drug Screens
- Demonstrates proper hand-off between shifts-Pending log review
- Demonstrates accurate order entry in Sunquest lab
- Demonstrates appropriate interactions with patients during venipuncture (AIDET).
- Demonstrates proper registration of patients in Encompass
- Maintains CPR certification
TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, stooping, bending, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to lift and support the weight of 35 pounds in handling medical equipment, and supplies. Must speak and understand English fluently. Requires functional vision, hearing, dexterity, critical thinking and the ability to make decisions to adapt to changes in the department. Additional department specific physical requirements may be identified for unique responsibilities within the department.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED required. Graduate from an accredited school of phlebotomy program preferred or
enrolled in a health sciences program, i.e. MLT/MT or RN. Certification by ASPT or ASCP preferred.
Experience is preferred, but not required.
