Job Summary

The University of Colorado, Boulder Police Department (CUPD) encourages applications for Police Officer Recruits! This role maintains peace and solves criminal activity on campus. Officers' duties can include the following: conduct various methods of patrol, arrest violators, file criminal cases with prosecuting attorneys' offices, respond to emergencies, and provide a wide range of citizen assistance.

The CUPD is a full-service police agency with 46 sworn and 36 non-sworn employees providing community-based public safety services to a diverse community of 36,000 affiliates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Every year the department responds to approximately 20,000 calls for service and ensures the safety and security for all of their PAC-12 Conference athletic events with attendance at football games exceeding 50,000 fans. Patrolling the campus by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, and vehicle, the CU Boulder Police work diligently with the University community and surrounding agencies to ensure a timely and coordinated law enforcement response.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

General Operations

  • Provides a visible presence via patrol on foot, bike, or motorized vehicle in order to deter crime and reassure the campus community.
  • Develops and maintains a knowledge of the campus community to further identify individuals and locations at risk for criminal activity.
  • Responds to calls and requests from the public for assistance.
  • Conducts initial investigations, gathers evidence, and takes statements in compliance with relevant legal requirements; this may include working on complex investigations.
  • Investigates and takes action on information received from members of the public.
  • Acts with sensitivity when dealing with situations such as delivering news of sudden deaths, or when dealing with sexual crime.
  • Interviews suspects, victims, and witnesses in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • Defuses potentially volatile situations with due regard to the safety of all involved.
  • Conducts arrests with due regard for human rights, security, health and safety of detained individuals, in addition to members of the public, colleagues and self.
  • Carries out traffic legislation in accordance with relevant legal parameters, issues citations for offenses, and conducts traffic control.
  • Serves warrants.
  • Investigates and processes lost and found property.
  • May rotate to auxiliary units including assignments within Investigations or Support Services.
  • May assist with policy development and project design for internal and external programs.
  • May be assigned to train or assist in the training of other officers or personnel.
  • May be required to make procurement decisions in accordance with established policy.

Evidence & Subsequent Investigations

  • Submits internal crime reports and criminal information reports.
  • Attends and offers evidence and testimony in court and at other hearings.
  • Gathers, records, and analyses information to achieve campus community safety and crime reduction objectives and providing crime prevention advice. (Relates to Clery Act provisions)
  • Completes administrative procedures.

Auxiliary Events

  • Works in partnership with various groups and individuals affiliated with the community, and other law enforcement agencies to provide advice, education, and assistance to maintain a safe campus environment. In addition, takes specific assignments to keep the peace on campus or at community events.
  • Assists the public with non-criminal situations such as medical emergencies, fires, hazardous materials accidents, natural disasters, stranded motorists, and missing persons, as well as provides directions and information to the public.
  • Assists with University special events such as athletics, dignitary appearances, and other community oriented events.

Other Duties

  • Participation in Departmental and Auxiliary committees.
  • Unspecified duties directed by supervisors to maintain the operational readiness of the Department.
  • Short-notice response to emergency situations such as floods, fire, or other unpredictable situations.
  • Completing crime education presentations and enforcement programs.
  • Completing continuing education to maintain proficiency in knowledge of laws, use of computer based resources, crime scene processing methods, arrest control techniques, non-lethal weapons methods, driving, and firearms skills through regular training sessions.
  • May implement or be called upon to operate outside daily performance parameters of any incident command, crisis situations, preplanned events and other critical incidents
  • May be recalled back to the department before or after normal shift hours to complete reports, or other duties to assist in department operations.
  • If the incumbent is assigned to a police academy or other training program, incumbent agrees to complete all courses of study as outlined by the host.
  • Follows all established departmental policies and University rules as directed by management.

What You Should Know

  • If a candidate has detentions experience within the last year from a full-time county sheriff’s department detention facility or full time large municipal detention facility, the number of years’ experience will determine which step each employee falls up to Step 3 in the Police Officer Salary Schedule. New employees with more than 3 years of experience will enter at Step 3. State or Federal Corrections settings will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on job duties, training, and experience.
  • This position is considered a Campus Security Authority as well as Essential Services.

  • The salary range for this position is $70,449 - $80,007 annually.

What We Require

  • One year of college coursework (30 semester hours). Appropriate experience will substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. Possession of current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification will substitute for required education.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age; possess a valid Colorado Driver License and no:
  • Felony convictions.
  • Domestic violence convictions.
  • Acquiring more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a driver’s license.
  • Alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten years.
  • This position is subject to a background investigation, including criminal, financial, and motor vehicle records background check; polygraph; an Excluded Parties List System check; reference check; and a drug screen. Pre-placement physical and psychological evaluations are also required.
