Job description
The Pre-sentence Investigator is an employee for the Court, and is responsible to the Common Pleas Judges for the writing of pre-sentence investigations (PSI). Incumbent is responsible for investigating, researching and writing PSI’s to assist in the coordination, enforcing the supervision and treatment of felony adult offenders placed on community control. Individual reports to the Chief Probation Officer as well as the appropriate Common Pleas Judge.
This position requires an associate’s degree or three (3) years of work related experience. Must possess a valid State of Ohio Driver License and acceptable driving record. Must meet and maintain qualifications for driving on County business at all times. Must be able to submit to and pass an employment background check, psychological evaluation and drug screening. Must not have a criminal record.
The position requires an individual who has integrity and self-confidence to ensure the orders of the court are complied with by the probationer. The individual must be reliable and dependable. The individual must be respectful in striving to accomplish the mission of the Delaware County Adult Court Services. The Delaware County Adult Court Service’s mission is to protect society and to rehabilitate the offender by holding the offender accountable by enforcing punitive conditions rendered by the Court. The individual must be able to adhere to State Standards and the Policies and Procedures of the Delaware County Adult Court Services Department.
- Conduct interviews with defendants, family members, agencies and associations to gather pertinent information to complete the PSI;
- Investigates defendant’s background and collects information pertaining to the defendant’s criminal history, family, employment, education, military service and other matters to determine potential risks and needs of the defendant; Analyzes criminal record checks through Ohio Bureau of Investigation, FBI and other agencies;
- Maintains complete and accurate records of all defendants’ contacts and defendants’ activities;
- Work with chemical dependency counselors, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, defense attorneys, employers, victims and social services agencies;
- Makes referrals and recommendations as necessary and assists offenders and or families in locating requested or mandatory services;
- Completes required state reports and assessments; Ohio Risk Assessment System (ORAS) and Community Control Information System (CCIS);
- Answers telephone, screens calls, gives and receives information;
- Schedules, updates, and maintains appointment schedule of defendants; revise and update PSI list;
- Attends and participates in staff meetings and staff trainings;
- Visits facilities where the defendant is incarcerated to conduct interviews;
- Provides recommendations to Court, determine the amount of restitution due to the victim as well as injuries or problems through consultation with social service agencies, victims, attorneys and others;
- Completes monthly reports; and
- Any other duties assigned by the Chief Probation Officer.
