Position Summary:

The registered nurse is a professional nurse who coordinates the delivery of nursing care for monitored patients during their hospital stay including cardiac monitoring, hemodynamic stabilization, responsive to emergent situations and care of evidence-based medicine patients. The registered nurse ensures that quality nursing care is rendered to all patients in accordance with the Michigan Department of Public Health, the medical center and nursing department standards. Utilizing the nursing process, functions primarily in direct patient care. The registered nurse participates in maintaining a safe patient care environment, maintains patient privacy, dignity, confidentiality and respects patient’s rights.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Performs purposeful hourly rounding including: Pain, Position, Personal needs and Possessions
  • Applies the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and discharge needs of patient/family
  • Triages patients in accordance with Emergency Severity Index (ESI) minor to critical recommendations
  • Quickly and accurately assesses patient care needs
  • Provides professional direct and indirect patient care in the emergency room setting
  • Performs triage duties as assigned
  • Administers medications to patients
  • Initiates and monitors IVs and medications
  • Provides an accurate and complete nursing record
  • Assesses patient condition using vital signs, test results, cardiac monitoring, etc.
  • Documents in the patient record in a timely, accurate, and concise manner. Develops teaching strategies for patient/family; documents education and learning appropriately in the health record.
  • Communicates with physician, charge nurses, co-workers as appropriate about changes in patients clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology
  • Collaborates with ancillary departments regarding test results, medications, and other patient/unit needs
  • Able to respond quickly and appropriately to changes in patient’s condition or response to treatment
  • Provides emotional support and reassurance to patient and patient families
  • Performs hemodynamic monitoring on critical patients, as needed, and interpret results
  • Responds to medical emergencies within the Medical Center
  • Assures proper hand-off of patients to other departments or facilities
  • Performs other department related duties as assigned


Qualifications:

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Must possess valid State of Michigan Nursing License
  • BLS Certified
  • ACLS Certified within 3 months of hire
  • Completed and certified (up to date) in Basic Arrhythmia
  • TNCC within 1 year of hire
  • ENPC within 18 months of hire
  • CPI within 1 year of hire
  • Possesses excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate and present self to patient, visitors, other staff and physicians verbally and in writing in courteous, confident and professional manner

Preferred:

  • Previous experience as RN in Emergency Department
  • CEN, CPEN, and/ or TCRN Certification
  • Previous Emergency Department RN experience
  • PALS Certification
  • BSN in Nursing
