About the Department of Pathology

Comprised of extraordinary faculty and staff, our mission is to improve the ability to diagnose, treat and understand the origin and manifestation of human disease, and to care for those who have or are at risk to develop disease. We accomplish this through our clinical services (in all fields of anatomic and clinical pathology, including molecular and genomic pathology, histocompatibility testing and transfusion medicine) and be research (which includes basic, translational and clinical research into the origins and manifestations of disease, including efforts to improve disease prediction and prevention as part of the goal of achieving precision medicine and health), and also by educating future leaders in pathology and related fields. About the Lab

This research lab provides support to Anatomic Pathology faculty in the Department of Pathology who perform research on human tissue samples, often utilizing techniques such as immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, immunofluorescence, laser capture microdissection, and tissue microarray analysis.


About the Position

We seek a research assistant who is trained in histology and immunohistochemistry to perform validation of novel antibody probes, construct tissue microarrays, and cut specialized histology sections for human tissue-based research. The candidate will work with multiple anatomic pathology faculty and will coordinate multiple research projects. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.


Duties include:

  • Design, recommend and implement histologic and immunohistologic techniques, in situ hybridization, laser-capture microdissection and tissue microarrays, involving paraffin-embedded and cryopreserved tissue in support of research projects.
  • Partner with faculty in support of students to teach/demonstrate processes of experiments and the safe operation of equipment.
  • Manage lab safety to protect personnel and environment. Develop the setup and operational procedures of lab equipment, using knowledge of chemicals and other hazards to minimize the likelihood of chemical exposure and/or other hazards. Liaison with EH&S to request services and support for lab operations.
  • Analyze and interpret research slides to recognize irregularities and invalid results.
  • Perform technical procedures, such as validation of antibody probes, to gather data in support of a research project.
  • Modify research protocols and procedures based on new learnings from literature review and attendance at scientific conferences.
  • Train personnel to ensure safe operation of lab.

Education & Experience (REQUIRED):

Bachelors’ degree and two years of experience in related scientific field, or combination of education and relevant experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (REQUIRED):

  • Demonstrated experience applying multidisciplinary scientific principles and practices to perform and assist with experimental design and coordinate laboratory activity.
  • Demonstrated experience with analysis and interpretation of research data, and ability to recognize irregularities and invalid results.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize data.
  • Basic experience with scientific software applications, systems, or programs relevant for the job.
  • Ability to coordinate and work with scientific or research staff and assist with technical procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to provide information to scientific and research staff

Physical Requirements*:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.

The expected pay range for this position is $78,000 to $90,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
