Job Description Summary:
We are seeking a full-time Research Associate to join a team of core research personnel to conduct studies within our Rodent Behavior Facility, a component of the Preclinical Models Core of the Kansas intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center. The selected individual will work independently under the supervision of the Core Manager and Scientific Director to collect, analyze, and present original research data obtained from behavioral assessment of animal models. The Facility is housed in modern laboratory space with state-of-the-art testing equipment, and will build on a 20 year history of service to the KUMC research community.

Job Description:
Required Qualifications

Education:
Bachelors' degree in biology, psychology, neuroscience or related areas, with at least one year of laboratory research experience.

Work Experience:
The candidate must have excellent communication and time management skills and be able to work independently as evidenced by application materials.
The candidate should be able to understand and manifest scientific rigor and reproducibility.

Preferred Qualifications:
Education:
Postgraduate training in a life sciences discipline or three to five years of cumulative laboratory/animal handling experience is preferred.
Previous experience with rodent behavior assays and experience in a neuroscience or psychology research environment is preferred.
Demonstrated proficiency with various automated data gathering and analysis software packages including Noldus Ethovision, SigmaPlot, Prism, DigiGait, Excel, and Basi FPA would be preferred.
Previous experience with rodent surgical and non-surgical procedures including ovariectomy, venipuncture, pellet implantation, i.p. or s.c. compound administration would be preferred.

Job Duties Outlined:
The Research Associate will work in a professional, client-focused manner to identify and support the needs of the research programs served by the Rodent Behavior Facility and will consult with investigators regarding projected use of the core facility to assist with experimental design and other variables that impact the data collection process.

The Research Associate will maintain the experimental calendar for user access to and use of rodent testing apparatus in the core.

The Research Associate will train users of core equipment, contribute to overall scheduling of access to the core, and maintain the function, safety, and cleanliness of core apparatus.
The Research Associate will perform behavioral testing and analysis including assessment of locomotor, sensory, and cognitive function.
The Research Associate will collect and compile original data, perform statistical analyses, and will create graphical representations of data sets where appropriate.
The Research Associate will effectively communicate using verbal and written platforms to convey project progress or facility-related issues in a timely manner to Core leadership and Investigator clientele.

The Research Associate will be responsible for keeping the core compliant with all regulatory agencies, both internal and external. This will include keeping logs of cleaning events, interacting with regulators or their proxies, and maintaining and adhering to relevant SOPs.

The Research Associate will be receptive to other duties that may arise in conjunction with working in a team-driven scientific environment.
