Purpose
The Office of the Vice President for Research seeks a Research Development Officer for the growing Defense Research Advancement (DRA) office focused on increasing UT’s capacity for executing innovative research for the Department of Defense. This position will be responsible for working directly with faculty, researchers and DoD representatives to support development of new research projects. This position will be a part of a new OVPR DRA office that is responsible for designing, developing and supporting processes, communications and reporting for DoD funded projects across campus; enabling The University of Texas at Austin’s leading research expertise to advance discovery for the DoD.
Responsibilities
- Focus on research development with a special emphasis placed on Department of Defense and Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) needs. Research development duties include obtaining competitive intelligence on funding programs; mapping UT research capabilities for presentation to DoD stakeholders; facilitating PI team building and ideation; substantive editing of proposal and administrative sections; and organizing reviews of proposals up though stages of submission and review. Work cooperatively with grant/contract specialists, graphic design support and other members of the OVPR DRA team in pursuit of these objectives.
- Facilitate connections between UT PIs and DoD representatives, as well as other external stakeholders. Liaise with other campus offices supporting overall UT Austin research priorities. Establish regular communication mechanisms with all partners and ensure that up-to-date information about research progress emerging from supported teams is conveyed.
- Design and deliver research development lectures or workshops based on knowledge gaps and needs identified within the researcher community. Periodically assess effectiveness of these offerings and modify programming as needed. Develop DoD specific templates and materials to share and disseminate across campus to researchers/PIs including training materials.
- Contribute to the overall success of the Defense Research Advancement team by performing other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an academic discipline and 3 years’ post-degree experience in either research development at a university/industry/similar or working within the DoD.
- Excellent demonstrated writing and editing skills with attention to detail.
- Experience managing complex proposal teams involving multiple principal investigators, including substantive contribution to the proposals’ content.
- Strong listening skills and a focus on customer advocacy.
- Extensive experience with MS Office products.
- Ability to travel up to 10% to work with project stakeholders.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree in a scientific or technical discipline with a track record of developing or writing successfully funded research grants for DoD or other government agency research sponsors involving large teams.
- Familiarity with DoD culture through service or employment in the US military, or close work with the DoD through employment at a contractor.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in research and development-oriented organizations, academic institutions, etc., or 5 or more years of organizational/program/project management positions.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage program delivery involving university faculty participants.
- Ability to distill complex research and scholarly concepts into simple terms that convey impact to general audiences.
- Experience with Microsoft SharePoint platform.
- Proven ability to work with minimal direction, formulate research plans, solve tough problems, and take initiative.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Salary Range
$110,000 + depending on qualifications
Working Conditions
- May work around standard office conditions.
- Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
Work Shift
- M-F, flexible between hours of 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM
- Location: The University of Texas at Austin (UT) main campus (and Pickle Research Campus (PRC) occasionally.)

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
