The Research Specialist will be responsible for coordinating the planning, implementation and evaluation of a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) funded Provider’s Clinical Support System-PCSS Universities grant focused on integrating Substance Use Disorder-SUD Education and Training into the School of Nursing Programs and Preceptor Field Based Community Settings of Azusa Pacific University (APU). This staff position is solely grant funded and contingent to the project funded timeframe of 3-years.
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree in social science or closely related field required.
- Master’s degree in social science or closely related field required.
Required Experience
- 1-3 years of experience working as part of a social science team
Primary Duties/Essential Functions
- Oversee administrative, planning, training, and evaluation functions of the project in terms of ensuring project timeline and completion of project-required activities tied to goals/objectives are successfully executed.
- Assist the Project Directors with the implementation and maintenance of all project-related training activities according to the proposed timeline, including, coursework integration, training coordination activities, and adhering to SAMHSA reporting protocols.
- Work closely with the training consultant (UCLA ISAP), ASAM partner, other project staff (research associate, data analyst) and Quartz/EPG technology partner to coordinate and conduct the ongoing project related activities.
- Ensure the successful coordination and execution of the substance use disorder (SUD) curriculum/training plan through research and course development and adaption of material/content with UCLA ISAP training consultant for the School of Nursing students, faculty and clinical preceptors.
- Coordinate the integration of the SUD curriculum/training into coursework within the School of Nursing with designated staff, including overseeing, tracking, and evaluating the coursework integration for reporting purposes.
- Ensure the successful implementation of the developed/adapted substance use disorder (SUD) curriculum/training on the online Learning Management System (LMS) with EPG/Quartz Health Solutions for successful access to students, faculty, and clinical preceptors.
- Coordinate evaluation activities with faculty and students ensuring low rates of data collection attrition for reporting purposes.
- Oversee the regulatory protocols (IRB applications and management).
- Oversee the administrative coordination of the project activities with APU School of Nursing clinical field preceptors through the design, implementation and evaluation of a needs assessment for informing training activities.
- Work with the project staff to oversee and manage the report writing required SAMHSA reporting.
- Conducting systematic literature reviews for projects and curriculum development for contracted trainings.
- Collaborate with team on implementing data analysis and protocols for data related tasks.
- Development of project materials (agendas, PowerPoint presentations, handouts, reports) and report writing.
- Managing Continuing Education (CE) records, including CE certificates, evaluations and assisting with renewal applications for CE boards.
- Developing monthly progress reports, providing oral summaries to collaborating agencies, and presenting/submitting evaluations of training.
- Assisting research faculty with administrative aspects of projects.
- Regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs.

- Skills in maintaining certifications for IRB (e.g. responsible conduct of research).
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing, with project team, and other project partners.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with project team and other project partners.
- Organizational skills for managing various aspects of project (meeting agendas, minutes, records of training events, reports) as required.
- Skill in conducting literature reviews, developing/adapting material for curriculum
- Skills in reviewing data collected and writing up reports.
- Skill in data entry and analysis, including tables and figures, and monitoring.
- Skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Apps for presentations, reports and conferences.
- Must be comfortable working independently, taking initiative and working collaboratively as part of a team.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computers and software for data analysis (SPSS) and word processing.
- Demonstrated knowledge in monitoring budgets and tracking expenses.
- Willingness to work occasional evening hours.
- Written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage details and follow through.
- Must be collaborative and an effective team member and team builder.

Compensation
- Grade 8 $21.44 - $27.87 is the hourly compensation for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package.
