For more than 70 years, Mercy Medical Center Redding has offered comprehensive health care in the North State, providing acute care and a full range of medical services. The 267-bed hospital offers major medical services including a Level II Trauma Center as well as specialized Cardiovascular Care, Stroke Care, Orthopedics, Neurological Surgery, Comprehensive Cancer Care, Maternity Care, and da Vinci Robotic Surgery. It is the sole provider of obstetrical services, along with the only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Shasta County. In addition, the hospital’s network of care includes Mercy Home Health and Hospice and Dignity Health Connected Living. Mercy Medical Center Redding is a member of the Dignity Health system and is a sister facility to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff and Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta. Position summary:
This position is a transition-to-practice program for the new graduate licensed RN.
Application period: April 3rd- April 23nd
Residency Program Start: July 2023
What is this program like?
As a RN resident, you will be hired into the facility as a full-time employee. You will be supported professionally and emotionally by a network of expert nurses who act as teachers, preceptors, mentors, and educators. Depending on the unit of hire, the program will consist of several months of orientation and training alongside a dedicated preceptor until deemed competent to practice independently. This is an intense, focused program that will foster the development of critical thinking, evidence-based decision-making, stress management, and leadership skills. Our content is created to prepare the newly licensed graduate to deliver safe, effective, and quality patient care. The new graduate will experience the true meaning of interdisciplinary care via clinical rotations with Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, Lab, Physical Therapy, Wound Care, Radiology, Cath Lab, and Rapid Response.
The program will begin with 8 hour days/5 days per week for the first two weeks of orientation. This will include didactic, SIM and hands on skills training. After the orientation period, the new graduate will move to three 12 hour shifts with dedicated preceptors on the unit of hire.
After program completion and competency validation, the graduate nurse will move into full-time, 12 hour benefited positions in their assigned unit.
Upon successful completion of this paid RN residency, you'll be prepared to work as an independent, professional nurse on your home unit. The residency program is designed to assist the new graduate in gaining the experience, skills, judgment, and confidence you'll need to thrive in your new career. What department will I be placed in?
Department assignments are based on several criteria, including background experience and skills of the RN along with the staffing needs of each department. Department assignments will be determined by the interview team and offers made prior to the start date.
Upon successful completion of the program, the RN will be placed in full-time, benefitted positions within one of the departments listed below:

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications for this program:
- Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program with a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher AND have graduated within the last 12 months. Candidates with a BSN or higher are preferred. We welcome ADN candidates that are on track to complete their BSN within the next 3 years.
- Must have a current California RN license and an AHA BLS-HCP certification PRIOR to program start date.
- If you are offered a position in our Neuro Tele unit, Telemetry IMCU, or Progressive Care Unit, you MUST have ACLS prior to your start date. It is highly recommended to have ACLS regardless of unit of hire.
