Position Highlights
The Department of Medicine, within the College of Medicine - Tucson, is seeking a Scientific Analyst to provide data analysis and data management for the Division of Nephrology. The incumbent will extract information and analyze data from various databases and sources in support of the Division's clinical research. They will build and manage large-scale databases, and support population health initiatives by developing and implementing machine learning algorithms to identify patients for establishing a registry. The incumbent will also be instrumental in the facilitation of grant writing to secure new funding for clinical research within the Division.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides data service by constructing customized statistical analytic files (SAF) from big data (national datasets including but not limited to USRDS with Medicare Claims, UNOS, SRTR datasets), managing data storage, and analyzing constructed data sets for clinical research.
  • Supports construction of large-scale database from UNOS DonorNet (using MathLab, machine vision, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Optic Character Recognition (OCR)).
  • Manages built databases (MongoDb, etc) for ongoing projects.
  • Constructs a vocabulary and database schema using generally accepted terminology utilizing the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM) and standardized vocabularies, and monitors accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Supports OCR and image recognition projects.
  • Works with University of Arizona Soteria (HIPAA complaint cloud) and High Performance Computing clusters.
  • Supports Population Health initiative; develops and implements machine learning algorithms to identify (e-phenotype) acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in EHR (Cerner) and establish an AKI/CKD registry.
  • Supports and facilitates grant writing for NIH, AHRQ, ASN, AST, ASTS grants.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in programing languages SAS, SQL, Python, statistical languages (including Stata, MATLAB, and R).
  • General understanding of clinical research standards and proper statistical methods.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree is required.
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience is required.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Science degree in Computer Science, Data Analysis, Business Analytics, Data Science, Statistics, or Mathematics.

  • Experience working with MongoDB and image recognition systems is preferred.
