Senior Recreation/Community Services Supervisor

The Recreation & Community Services Department is searching for five (5) recreation professionals to join the team as a Senior Recreation/Community Services Supervisor. The Senior Recreation/Community Services Supervisor is a front-line supervisory level position that develops and oversees a variety of citywide recreation and community services programs, activities, and events. In addition, this position coordinates and promotes cooperative efforts with community agencies, assists with budget preparation and participates in grant writing and other funding opportunities.

This recruitment will establish an eligibility list for the Senior Recreation/Community Services Supervisor classification that will be used for any current and future vacancies within the Recreation & Community Services Department as well as the continuum of care division of the Housing Services Department.

Examples of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Senior Recreation/Community Services Supervisor include the following:


  • Develops, markets, evaluates, and oversees a variety of citywide recreation and community and human service programs and facilities.
  • Develops programs based on program evaluation and measurement criteria.
  • Develops new programs based on needs assessment and current community trends, including estimation of needed resources such as staffing, budget, and other resources.
  • Finalizes and presents recommendations for new programs.
  • May oversee a community facility providing multiple recreation and community and human service programs and activities.
  • Reviews approved facility reservations for accuracy, works with the center coordinator on scheduling staff and follows up on applicant compliance.
  • Supervises and directs the activities of assigned staff including employee selection, work assignment, performance evaluation, employee development, disciplinary action, and complaint resolution.
  • Monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; assesses and monitors work load, administrative and support systems.
  • Develops, establishes, and enforces new and revised administrative systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Establishes, fosters, and maintains relationships with staff and internal/external community groups.
  • Assists with budget expenditure and revenue monitoring.
  • Participates in the review and compilation of budget data.
  • Assists with grant application preparation; researches and recommends alternative revenue sources.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends, legislation, and best practices in the recreation and community services field; evaluates their impact on departmental operations and recommends policy and procedural changes.
  • Other projects may be assigned based on Department need.

Qualification Guidelines

Education

Equivalent to an Associate's degree in recreation, physical education, public administration, or related field. Additional years of experience coordinating recreation and community services programs, including supervision of staff, may be substituted for required education on a year for year basis.

Experience

Five years of experience in coordinating recreation and community services programs, including supervision of recreation staff or supervising and managing homeless, youth, or other types of drop-in centers.

License

Valid Class C California driver's license and acceptable driving record at the time of appointment.

Special Requirement

Ability to work flexible and weekend hours as needed.

Desirable

Bilingual is highly desirable. Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Human Services, or Public Administration. Experience in Microsoft Office 365, and recreation software programs, preferably CivicRec, and other database applications.
