Position: St. James Senior Center Senior Cook
Pay Range: Commensurate with Experience
Department: St. James Senior Center
Status: Non-Exempt
Reports to: St. James Senior Center Director
Approval date: June 26, 2019
Summary: This position must promote, encourage, and organize activities that address the physical, social, and emotional concerns of area senior citizens, patrons, and their families. Prepare and cook large quantities of food and all other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Prepare and serve meals.
- Clean, cut, and cook meat, fish, or poultry.
- Cook foodstuffs according to menus, numbers of portions to be served in coordination with Senior Center Administrative Coordinator.
- Clean and inspect galley equipment, kitchen appliances, and work areas to ensure cleanliness and functional operation. Inspect facilities, equipment or supplies to ensure conformance to standards.
- Responsible for cleaning entire Senior Center dining facility or directing staff to assist.
- Apportion and serve food to facility residents, employees, or patrons.
- Operation Monitoring — Watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
- Dish washing and sanitation.
- Trash collection
- Assist the Administrative Coordinator in “goodwill ambassador” functions.
- Oversee the direct supervision of employees of the Senior Center kitchen staff/volunteers, coordinating schedules and personnel as needed.
- Assist with budget planning to the Executive Director/SC Admin Coordinator for the Senior Center.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate individuals to work or volunteer in program(s).
- Assess, procure, and maintain program related supplies and equipment and inventory.
- Maintain approved safety procedures for all participants.
- Confer with coworkers to coordinate work activities.
- Respond to customer problems or complaints.
- Knowledge of clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
- Inventory control and order preparation for our vendors, with regards to what we currently have in stock and what is needed.

- Performing General Physical Activities — Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials

- Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates — Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person
- Establishing and Maintaining Interpersonal Relationships — Developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintaining them over time
- Dependability — Job requires being reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfilling obligations.
- Attention to Detail — Job requires being careful about detail and thorough in completing work tasks
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum
Understanding and experience with commercial kitchen operations/cooking.
Understanding and experience working with public
Ability to set priorities, coordinate projects, and meet critical deadlines.
Understanding and experience with computers and software programs to enhance the operations of the Senior Center.
Exceptional communications skills to be able to relay information effectively to management and to the public, the Board Members, staff, and volunteers.
Preferred
Experience in planning, organizing, and directing the work of others, either directly or through subordinate supervision.
Ability to set priorities, coordinate projects, and meet critical deadlines.
Prepare clear, concise, and effective written material.
High school diploma or GED required. Preference given for a completed associate or bachelor’s degree in a field related to culinary arts, program management, communications, or social services.

Pay: $15.00 - $19.00 per hour
