Job Summary
The preferred location for this position is Charlotte, NC. This position has the option to be based in the Plaza in Charlotte, NC in the NCRH building in Raleigh, NC or out of an Operations Center in Raleigh or Charlotte.
This position is for the role of Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Engineer on the Carolinas Customer Delivery team. The role requires knowledge of federal requirements for SPCC and is responsible for SPCC compliance for Customer Delivery in both Carolina’s East Region (DEP) and West Region (DEC).
The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provides designs that adhere to relevant safety, environmental, and engineering guidelines.
- Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of engineering; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondences, documentations, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Coordinates with field engineering, customer liaisons, EHS, Program Development and Governance, construction departments and others to ensure that projects are cost effective and completed on time.
- Performs SPCC calculations, analyzes oil filled equipment, and prepares reports for sealing.
- Develops SPCC drawings using current Duke standards and creates SPCC reports/plans.
- Provides berm calculations and constructible solutions to prevent a berm breach in the event of an oil spill.
- Supports positive customer experiences through timely completion of design requests.
- Provides construction support and solutions. After construction, inspects newly installed secondary containment devices.
- Supervises the compliance and recordkeeping system of the SPCC plans, Centralized Design D- D Substation SharePoint and CAST Pro, one of Duke Energy's data management tools used to track and ensure regulatory compliance and houses various environmental documents.
- Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
- Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Maintains accurate records and files.
- Participates in other assigned duties during emergency or storm events.
- Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Basic/Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer.
- A Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. Engineering degree.
- Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience (without a Professional Engineer certification) or 5 years of engineering experience (with a Professional Engineer certification).

- Experience in the utility industry.
- Skills and knowledge of substation construction and design best practices.
- Demonstrated ability with AutoCAD.
- Proficient in principles of project management.
- B.S. Civil Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program.
- Registered Professional Engineer.
- Advanced degree in engineering.
- Ability to scope and estimate projects.
- Previous work experience providing engineering services for the utility industry.
- Basic Maximo experience.
- Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
- Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Capable of learning quickly, working independently and in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt to constant changing of work needs and priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively handle multiple assignments.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.

Specific Requirements
- Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE. A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
