The Position

Senior Library Assistant

The City of Ontario reserves the right, if necessary, to accept applications from the first one hundred (100) applicants that meet the qualification guidelines outlined below.
Additionally, the following procedures will apply:
  • Separate Promotional and Open (external) Eligibility Lists will be established.
  • The Promotional Eligibility List will be comprised of current City employees (full or part-time) who meet the minimum qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
  • The Open Eligibility List will consist of external applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
  • The hiring department will consider the Promotional Eligibility List prior to considering candidates on the Open Eligibility List.
The Ontario City Library has an exciting opportunity for a motivated and team-oriented individual who is interested in creating a positive user experience. The Senior Library Assistant provides excellent customer service and is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the daily operations of a section of the library. The Senior Library Assistant is also expected to establish and maintain good relationships with other library units, city agencies, and community groups.

Examples of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Senior Library Assistant include the following:

  • Oversees and directs the activities of clerical and paraprofessional staff and volunteers including scheduling and evaluation.
  • Provides reader's advisory and reference services to adults and children.
  • Prepares reports, records, and other materials as necessary.
  • Formulates promotional material for the library.
  • Performs manual and automated bibliographic searches for materials.
  • Assists in planning and conducting library programs and library tours.
  • Assists in selecting, ordering, and distributing office supplies and library materials.
  • Receives, verifies, and prepares invoices for payment.
  • Provides inter-library loan services.
  • Assists with tabulating receipts and maintaining accounting records as needed.

Qualification Guidelines

Education
Associate degree in Library Science or related field. Two additional years of qualifying experience as described below in a public library may be substituted for the educational requirement of this position.

Acceptable forms of proof include Unofficial Transcripts, Official Transcripts, Photos and/or Photocopies of Institutional Degree/Certifications. Experience

One (1) year of experience in a library position comparable to that of a Library Assistant (Download PDF reader) or Supervising Library Clerk.

License
A valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.


Desirable
Bachelor's Degree.
Experience in integrated library system, especially Polaris.
Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish.
One (1) year of supervisory experience.


Special Requirement

Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
