SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the Senior Research Assistant is to perform non-codingRNAs bioinformatics duties in Dr Calin's laboratory and to assist with the laboratory collaborations on bioinformatics. The Senior Research Assistant conducts experiments in bioinformatics of non-codingRNAs and of protein coding genes. Discusses goals of each project with supervisor and receives verbal and/or written instructions from the supervisor on how to conduct an assay or experiment to achieve the goals of the project. Based on these discussions and basic instructions, as well as discussions with the colleagues from the laboratory or the collaborators, develop a step-by-step written procedure of specific actions required to conduct the bioinformatics experiment prior to proceeding. Technical experience working with non-codingRNAs bioinformatics tools are desirable. The SRA must be able to provide technical and coordination skills in carrying out various research projects, coordinates procedures, estimates budgets, and performs technical laboratory duties in accordance with general and/or specific plans.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

  • Performs data collection, design, and analysis for research projects in support of Calin's laboratory. Maintains all research databases for assigned studies and makes necessary changes and enhancements required including coding, editing, and data field conversions. Provides data reports and status of data analysis.

  • Will perform identification for microRNAs targets, the analyses of non-codingRNAs array datasets, the various clinical statistical investigations including Kaplan Meyer and Overall Survival, the deep sequencing data analyses from RNA seq and DNA seq as well as from Sanger sequencing.

  • Responsible for providing computer services and/or cataloging large amounts of data. Develops new procedures and improves upon existing techniques relevant to ongoing research. Maintains experimental records in laboratory books and computer files.

  • Collaborates in manuscript preparation and grant submissions. Prepares letters, reports and other documents to support research findings/efforts. Conducts library and web queries related to research projects. Reads and understands articles related to ongoing research and data management. Performs daily back-up of databases and other critical research data/records.

  • Maintains lab equipment in clean, working order within all possible limitations, and keeps up to date contact record information for service technicians in the event any machines are not calibrated or functioning properly.

  • Works in a collaborative and supportive manner with the colleagues from Calin's laboratory. Is always focused on the tasks required and exhibits meticulous work habits. Records and evaluates data in accordance with routine data management in the laboratory. Keeps an updated lab notebook, maintains and follows recorded protocols for each individual siRNA screen. Keeps data well organized and easily accessible.

  • Works well with senior members of the lab and is receptive to been trained by the more experienced lab members on the use of the equipment.

  • Collects and organizes information for project reports.

  • Strictly adheres to the standard operating procedure they are trained to follow with no exception.

Teaching Others. Assist the lab manager teach laboratory techniques to graduate students, surgical fellows, and other research personnel.

Other duties as assigned

Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field. Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work.
