A Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) is a healthcare professional who works with individuals of all ages who have difficulties with communication and/or swallowing. The primary responsibilities of an SLP include:
1. Assessing and diagnosing speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders, as well as cognitive-communication and swallowing disorders.
2. Developing and implementing treatment plans to address identified disorders and goals.
3. Providing direct therapy to individuals, including articulation therapy, language intervention, voice therapy, and fluency therapy.
4. Collaborating with other healthcare professionals and family members to ensure continuity of care.
5. Keeping accurate and detailed records of progress and outcomes.
6. Staying current with the latest research and best practices in the field through continuing education.
SLPs may work in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private practice, or nursing homes. They may also work with a diverse population, including children, adults, and geriatric individuals.
A Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology and a state license is typically required to become a SLP.
