Collins Aerospace is seeking a seasoned Senior Chemical and Materials Engineering professional within the Applied Research & Technology organization within Enterprise Engineering.

This role designs surface engineering solutions, develops processes and common procedures, conducts tests on raw materials, and may support production, including performing failure analysis.

This hybrid role is based out of the Windsor Locks, CT site. The selected candidate must be within a reasonable commutable distance of Windsor Locks, CT, or be willing to relocate.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conducts research to develop new or improved surface engineering processes to produce functional coatings for corrosion protection, wear resistance, etc.

  • Develop and mature surface engineering technologies to advance technology & manufacturing readiness levels and support technology transition for production.

  • Develops and updates related chemical processing standards for component manufacturing .

  • Conducts or supervises tests on materials & processes and uses related characterization techniques to understand material properties & process capabilities, diagnose quality issues and demonstrate remedies.

  • Designs and directs the testing for new surface engineering processes, including material analysis and optimization.

  • Works cooperatively in a multidiscipline team to understand material requirements from a system perspective and develop materials & processing solutions to meet the requirements.

  • Communicates results effectively in relevant business context to various stakeholders as well as close technical teams.

  • Provides technical leadership and assists in training less experienced engineers, when required, to help them solve problems and enhance their capabilities.

  • Performs material analyses that include, but are not limited to, failure analysis of components, durability characteristics, life predictions, and conformance to specifications/regulations.

  • Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes.

  • May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.

  • Must be willing and able to travel 15% of the time

Qualifications/Experience Needed:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience OR an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience

  • Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent Resident “Green Card” holder

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years’ experience with surface engineering

  • Prior experience in corrosion engineering & surface treatment for manufacturing

  • 2+ years’ experience of process development & material characterization related to vapor deposition or electroplating, or conversion coating & anodization, and/or wear resistance coating

  • Experience with improving the surface finish of metals or composites.

  • Experience with coating formulation development such as electroplating, electro-less plating, and primers.

  • Experience with modeling and/or analytical characterization

  • Experience with compliance to environmental regulations including but not limited to REACH, TSCA, and CMP.

  • Familiarity with incorporation and compliance to specifications such as AMS, ASTM, Military, and ISO.

  • Working knowledge & experience on using instrumentation for surface engineering matters, including chemical, surface, & micro-structural analysis using ICP, SEM/EDS, XPS, electrochemical apparatus etc.
