TITLE: Foreclosure Staff Attorney
REPORTS TO: Supervising Attorney, Foreclosure Prevention Project
Position Summary: The Foreclosure Staff Attorney will provide legal services to clients of The Legal Project, Inc. who are facing foreclosure. The Foreclosure Staff Attorney provides legal advice and representation to homeowners who are at risk of foreclosure. The Staff Attorney represents homeowners in all stages of litigation. The Staff Attorney also conducts consultations with homeowners giving general legal advice. The Staff Attorney will also conduct trainings and workshops for Legal Project staff and/or community partners, as instructed.
PRINICPAL RESPONSIBILITES:
- Provide high-quality legal representation to homeowners who are facing foreclosure in settlement conferences, foreclosure defenses, and other litigation that may be necessary
- Provide consultations to homeowners on matters relating to foreclosure as necessary.
- Work as part of a team to ensure that homeowners receive appropriate legal services.
- Make referrals to community resources specifically HUD approved housing counselors as appropriate.
- Participate in team problem solving with Legal Project staff to ensure the smooth and effective functioning of programs.
- Attend HOMESAVE meetings as necessary
- Maintain and update knowledge of developments in the legal field related to foreclosure
- Assist in the identification of other legal needs for future program development.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Admitted to NYS Bar.
2. Commitment to providing high quality legal services to clients
3. Foreclosure and/or other housing related experience preferred
4. Excellent advocacy, research and writing skills and strong attention to detail
5. Strong organizational and administrative skills
6. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
7. Ability to think strategically and creatively, solve problems, exercise initiative and manage multiple tasks/projects and sensitive information while also being able to determine when to ask for assistance
8. Ability and willingness to work in a team
9. Impeccable integrity, judgment and discretion
10. Support mission and vision of The Legal Project.
