Overall Purpose of Job

To provide exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the centre of all we do at Beacon Orthopaedics.

To provide professional nursing skills in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the nursing care of assigned patients.

To work within the orthopaedic service with total flexibility and hours will be divided over the working week.

To work within the Beacon Centre for Orthopaedics as needed.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

  • Participates in continuous quality improvement and risk management programmes in a collaborative manner with multi-disciplinary colleagues.
  • Independently performs duties and assumes responsibilities for care of assigned patients.
  • Performs techniques and routines in the OPD service area.
  • Participates in the mentoring and teaching patients and/or family members.
  • Participates in patient consultations, manage follow-up phone calls, appointment arrangement and any other issues directly and indirectly related to the efficient delivery and management of the Service.
  • Actively participate in Service Delivery ensuring satisfactory outcomes.
  • Enhances the collegial consultant-nursing relationship recognizing the value inthe development of respectful working environment. Close communication with the consultants is necessary.
  • Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.
  • Performs related duties as required, including liaising with hospital staff and wards particularly with regards to inpatient referrals.
  • Participates in the JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation.

Department Specific Requirements


  • Assists consultants with procedures and maintaining and improving standards of care.
  • Provides patient education both in the clinic and on the telephone to patients and families and documentation of all interactions is required.
  • Focus education to maintain clinical competence in Orthopaedic specialty
  • Participate in Data collection, statistical reporting and outcome reviews.
  • Participates in research projects as needed, and to support the clinical practice and consultants in the department

Clinical Responsibilities:


The post holder will be familiar with and adhere to The Professional Scope of Practice Framework (An Bord Altranais 2015)

The post holder will partake in the Patient Safety and Quality processes thereby contributing to:

  • Patients are cared for in the optimum clinical environment, adhering to all nursing and hospital wide policies and guidelines.
  • The patient needs are individually assessed
  • The patients’ families and significant others are involved as appropriate
  • Documentation is recorded in a professional, legible and timely fashion.
  • The identification of quality initiatives
  • The evaluation of current practices to best practice
  • Health Promotion initiatives.
  • The Hospital Wide Accreditation Cycle JCI
  • Participates in unit-based and interdepartmental QI activities.
  • Maintains good working relationships with other departments and with physicians, Patients, families.
  • Participates in ongoing consultation and collaboration with physicians and other care providers to maximize patient outcomes and unit specific goals.
  • Demonstrates willingness to assist co-workers whenever needed

  • A warm and sensitive approach to all patients and their expressed concerns is necessary.
  • Attend appropriate study days/courses.
  • Be a preceptor and or supervisor to students/newly appointed staff

Person Specification


Qualifications

  • An Board Altranais Registered General Nurse license in good standing.

Experience

  • Three years clinical experience
  • Minimum of one year experience in an orthopaedicclinical area.
  • Knowledge and experience in facilitating delivery of a multidisciplinary service in an ever changing environment.
  • The employee, must speak, read and write grammatically correct English.
  • Candidates must possess teaching abilities, leadership qualities, professional judgment, critical thinking and problem solving abilities, and a sense of professional development. Must demonstrate multi-tasking ability.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of new developments in specialised area.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of national strategies where appropriate to nursing care

  • Demonstrate a focus on quality with dignity and respect.
  • Demonstrate evidence of ability to empathise with and treat patients, relatives and colleagues

Personal Competencies

All posts in Beacon Hospital require a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager of hospital management.
