POSITION: Student Support Specialist: Attendance Liaison

IDEA Public Charter School in Washington, DC challenges, motivates, and strengthens all of our scholars’
intellect, whether they are pursuing paths to college or the workforce. Founded in 1997, IDEA is located
in a state-of-the-art educational facility in the historic Deanwood community. In addition to rigorous
core academics, IDEA offers career and technical education pathways, including business management,
carpentry, child development, and computer science, as well as athletics and green initiatives.

The student support specialist: attendance liaison works with the chief operating officer and school
leaders in monitoring student attendance and supporting the school’s academic and behavior programs.
The student support specialist: attendance liaison also provides proactive leadership to manage
accurate reporting of student attendance, frequent communication with families and staff, analyzes
trends and gaps with in-seat and overall student attendance reports to remove attendance barriers. This
role also includes supporting behavioral programs and monitoring with all stakeholders to cooperatively
create a positive school climate. The student support specialist: attendance liaison is responsible for the
following:

Attendance Monitoring

  • Monitor daily attendance and assist with various attendance procedures.
  • Collaborate with school leaders, students, and parents to make sure attendance matters are
addressed in an accurate manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance; prepare and maintain a bi-weekly report with

a variety of records and files regarding student attendance, tardiness, truancy, suspension, and
discipline.

  • Communicate with students and parents regarding attendance and related issues; make and
receive phone calls and notes regarding student attendance concerns and problems; make
home visits as needed.
  • Provide student attendance information to staff, parents, and authorities as requested; explain
and interpret policies and regulations regarding school attendance.
  • Prepare correspondence pertaining to student attendance and records as appropriate.
  • Prepare accurate attendance information and required documents and materials for School

Attendance Task force meetings, SST/ intervention meetings, parent meetings, and truancy
interventions.

  • Refer serious attendance problems according to established procedures; assist in identifying and
resolving problems of students with frequent absenteeism.
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports related to student attendance.
  • Assist with daily absence (class period attendance and in-seat) verification.
  • Provide professional development to staff and parents around attendance procedures and

protocols.

Scholar Affairs Assist in monitoring intervention programs that address the needs of at-risk students.
  • Provide accurate data reports (attendance in-seat and period attendance, tardiness reports) to

assist with monitoring school culture and climate goals as it aligns to the PMF.

  • Document and refer scholars to appropriate social and mental health services personnel. Follow
up on student improvement and performance from referral process.
  • Supervise students on campus before and after school; monitor students during lunch, recess,
passing periods, and other activities, as needed.
  • Monitor and organize attendance functions; prepare letters, call parents, and attend meetings

as needed, regarding absent or tardy students; provide leadership for attendance improvement
efforts.

  • Celebrate scholars around attendance in the form of posters and incentive programs.
  • Provide direction to a variety of faculty, staff, and student programs and services; participate in

formal and informal classroom visitations and observations; provides recommendations and
suggestions for improvement as appropriate.

  • Participate as needed in individual educational program (IEP) meetings and student study
teams.


Front Office Functions

  • Rotate main office desk to assist parents and staff with day-to-day needs.

Experience and Abilities
  • Knowledge of computers, networking, and office practices.
  • Ability to communicate with school personnel, students, parents, and outside agencies.
  • Ability to perform common arithmetical functions.
  • Software/word processing skills for data entry, reporting, word processing, desktop publishing,
spreadsheets, and PowerSchool program.
  • Use discretion to structure tasks to meet expectations and prioritizes to meet deadlines.
  • Need limited supervision and is able to work independently and collaboratively in a team.
  • Use initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instructions.
  • Able to make decisions, create systems, and monitor structures to solve problems with school
data and information provided.
  • Able to disaggregate multiple data sources and highlight trends regarding student data that

impacts school culture and climate.

Qualifications

  • Ability to adapt and be flexible with changing work priorities and working with frequent
interruptions.
  • Effectively communicate with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Establish cooperative relations in a calm and tactful manner.
  • Ability to present high-level data in professional development, trainings, and/or teacher
workshops.
  • Display a positive attitude and is approachable to all stakeholders.
  • Has experience in specific work-related field or meets formal education requirements.
  • Able to work through complex circumstances to support students with school attendance.
  • Working knowledge of community resources, child welfare and attendance laws, and

regulations.
