Job Summary: Supervises, plans, organizes, controls and staffs the coding services for SFHS, including SFH - Tulsa, South, Laureate, Vinita and Muskogee. Includes researching, monitoring and coordinating all coding/billing needs in a constantly changing environment. The coding supervisor must be current and knowledgeable on regulatory requirements, establishing objectives and initiatives to meet those requirements, including medical necessity, correct coding initiatives, LCD and other payors. Works with all levels of staff and management, including executive level in handling request/denials from the RACs, ZPICS, MACS and other payors. Acts as primary resource in determining appropriateness of appeals and processing those appeals for payment. Ensures coding quality and productivity to exceed benchmarks. Handles all interviewing and hiring of coding staff. Monitors data abstracting. Coaches and provides ongoing and continuous education. Performs director's responsibilities as directed in absence. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in health information preferred.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required. Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) preferred.
Work Experience: 8 years related experience, preferably in a large acute care teaching facility; ICD10 training and certification preferred; experience with APR/DRG grouper preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: PC & software skills; Ability to produce reports in appropriate format. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to work with staff and executives at all levels. Working knowledge of related regulatory requirements. Ability to train and educate staff on coding guidelines for certification exam. Knowledge and understanding of Case Mix Index, Severity and Mortality ratings. Demonstrated knowledge with public reporting such as Healthgrades, Leapfrog and others, preferred.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Supervises all coding services for SFHS inclusive of SFH - Tulsa, South, Laureate, Vinita, and Muskogee. Assists in the establishment of HI and Coding goals, both short and long term strategic planning. Acts as a mentor for coding staff, continuously updating guidelines to meet regulatory requirements, providing ongoing education and training to coders for certification attainment. Works with coding auditors to determine focused review needs and to address variations in coding practices to ensure 95% compliance rate. Leads the system with new coding initiatives (ICD 10), teaching, training and educating both internal staff and physicians. Directly performs all interviewing, selecting, counseling and evaluating of coding staff. Provides monthly quality, productivity, FTE and other reports as needed for director. Performs job responsibilities in absence of director.
Decision Making: Independent judgment in making decisions involving non-routine problems under general supervision.
Working Relationships: Direct supervision of others - No. of people supervised: (36). Prepares and gives performance evaluations. Works with internal/external customers. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff. Works frequently with individuals at director level or above.
