San Jose Water is recruiting for a Survey Aide 1. Under immediate supervision and instruction, performs routine assignments in the Company’s Engineering Unit related to surveying activities.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Perform basic field duties assisting Surveyor or Survey Technician in field surveys including but not limited to opening manhole, valve boxes, vaults, and other miscellaneous structures.
2. Perform basic office duties assisting Surveyor or Survey Technician including but not limited to file organization, document preparation, and cad drafting.
3. Perform basic miscellaneous survey duties as directed by Supervisor/Surveyor including but not limited to breaking asphalt, digging holes, setting control points, and clearing out valve boxes.
4. Perform basic surveying procedures; Use, clean, repair, and maintain survey instruments and equipment.
5. Learn and apply the policies and practices of the survey department & the company
6. Perform and apply appropriate safety precautions and procedures in reference to safety manual

Education/Experience:
1. Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
2. One year of experience in field surveying or closely related civil engineering work.
3. Possession of a valid California driver’s license and good driving record.

Knowledge and Abilities:
1. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written procedures
2. General knowledge & usage of computer programs (MS Word, Excel…)
3. Ability to perform basic mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
4. Ability to read and interpret various types of mapping
5. Ability to locate surface water system features in the field
6. Effectively communicate both orally and in writing
7. Ability to use manual tools such as a shovel, pick, meter hook, measuring tape, hammer, etc...

Special Physical Requirements:
1. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time
2. Occasionally ascend/descend ladders, walk on construction planks, and move safely within construction sites
3. Frequently transports and positions surveying equipment up to 50 pounds
4. Must be able to visually detect flags and markers and read plans and maps

Pay Rate:
Survey Aide I ($31.411 - $37.075/hr)
