Salary Plan/Grade:

Survey Specialist II: B18/ $39,521 - $64,449
Survey Specialist III: B19/ $42,244 - $68,960

Position Description


SURVEY SPECIALIST II:

Provides technical expertise and advice on complex surveying projects and performs specialized surveying work under supervision of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor or licensed Professional Engineer. Work usually requires contact with governmental and/or private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

SURVEY SPECIALIST III:
Provides technical expertise and advice on complex surveying projects and performs specialized surveying work under the
supervision of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor or licensed Professional Engineer. Work requires contact with governmental
and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are
rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

SURVEY SPECIALIST II:

  • Conducts GPS research and development surveys.
  • Coordinates with and assists other sections as requested
  • Coordinates, schedules and/or conducts technical geodetic and satellite surveys which require the use of special high-accuracy techniques for mapping projects and engineering related functions.
  • Determines, coordinates, and sets benchmarks or locates those set by previous surveys.
  • Ensures safety equipment and traffic control devices are set up correctly
  • Installs, configures and maintains hardware and software for Global Positioning System (GPS) operations
  • Monitors and reviews work performance of contracted survey work.
  • Takes field notes, verifies accuracy of field notes, performs necessary calculations, uses software programs to determine coordinates, draws plots and documents work in the field diary.
  • Uses a variety of surveying software and related hardware.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

SURVEY SPECIALIST III:

  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Travels to gather information and recommend future surveying projects.
  • Provides guidance to contracted survey parties and monitors operations
  • Reviews survey job assignments, coordinates with other sections or district/contracted survey parties and monitors survey projects to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Serves as a project leader and reviews survey job assignments, coordinates information with district/contracted survey parties and monitors survey projects to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience:

SURVEY SPECIALIST II: 2 years surveying, drafting, cartography, mathematics, geography, GIS, construction, or engineering related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent).

SURVEY SPECIALIST III: 3 years surveying, drafting, cartography, mathematics, geography, GIS, construction, or engineering related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent).

SURVEY SPECIALIST II or III:

  • Certification as Surveyor in Training (SIT) by the State of Texas plus one (1) year surveying experience may substitute for experience.
  • Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license at time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Competencies:

SURVEY SPECIALIST II:

  • Computer-aided drafting and design systems
  • GPS, geodetic and GNSS surveying
  • Applicable surveying procedures, standards and instruments
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
  • Monitoring the status and progress of projects
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
  • Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps
  • Using surveying tools, equipment and instruments
  • Using GPS equipment and software

SURVEY SPECIALIST III:

  • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
