GENERAL SUMMARY

The Sylvan Teacher is responsible for creating a positive personal learning experience for students by teaching students using Sylvan program materials. Using the program materials, the teacher creates balanced and robust learning experiences for students. The Sylvan Teacher evaluates student progress on each assignment, communicates this progress, and works with Center staff to ensure learning is personal for each student.

• Part-Time Teachers wanted for Mon-Sat (morning and afternoon instruction shifts, depending on the day) tutoring at the Sylvan Learning Center of [Albany or Clifton Park or both]. We offer instruction both online and in-center, and ideally, we'd like teachers to be available for both, but the successful must be at least available to work in-center. Applicants who want to tutor only via online instruction will not be considered.
• We ask that you be available to instruct approximately 2 days per week and 2 Saturday mornings per month. During the summer we have both morning and afternoon hours, but starting September, we instruct Mon-Thurs 4-7 pm and Saturdays 9 am-1 pm. Sylvan teachers instruct K-12 students in the areas of Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Study Skills, SAT/ACT prep, Regents prep, and Homework Support, although you won't be asked to teach outside your competency. Sylvan administrative staff completes all lesson planning and parent conferencing, so our part-time teachers only do what they do best: Teach!
• High school math and science teachers can move to the front of the line.
• We are serious about requiring some actual teaching experience, so please don't submit just because you like to help students. We prefer that our teachers be state-certified, but so long as there is some classroom teaching in your recent experience, please feel free to submit an application. The certification can be from any state and does not need to be current - retired teachers are welcome.
• We provide the programs, find the student, deal with parents, provide the location and technology required, and address all scheduling, payment, etc. We don't ask that you work exclusively with us, and we schedule by the month, so we can accommodate your changing schedule. You never work with more than 3 students at a time, and we train you to do that.
• Our Sylvan programs are computer-adaptive, taught using the Sylvan proprietary program using an iPad as the primary platform but incorporating other materials, all aligned to the Common Core State Standards.

• Most of our teachers work 4-10 hours per week, depending on our enrollment, the programs they can teach, and their preferences.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

• Language Arts and Study Skills Program Teachers:
• Four year degree or equivalent required
• State or provincial teaching credentials (current or expired)
• Minimum of one or two years of teaching experience preferred Knowledge of phonics and reading comprehension preferred for reading teachers

Math Program Teachers:

Four year degree required in a discipline requiring 3 or more years of college level math

• SAT/ACT, Test Prep, and Advanced Reading Skills Teachers:
• Four year degree or equivalent preferred
• Knowledge of general office equipment such as copiers, printers, and office phones
• Knowledge of tablet computers preferred

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Prepares for each instructional session; Gathers and prepares materials as appropriate
• Greets students and initiates instruction to personally engage each student
• Instructs students according to the design of the Sylvan programs
• Manages students, tasks and time to create a balanced and robust instructional session
• Evaluates and records the progress of each student on their program assignment
• Uses praise and encouragement to ensure students are engaged and inspired to learn
• Motivates students with Sylvan tokens given for specific achievements according to the Sylvan instructional management standards
• Records and tracks tokens earned by students
• Manages the conclusion of each instructional session and manages the completion of learning log and transition activities; Supports procedures to ensure student safety and well-being
• Communicates specific student needs to Center staff
• Attends periodic staff meetings and completes ongoing training as needed
• Completes certification training on each Sylvan program taught to students
