Job description
* This position is in various locations throughout Southern Westchester County.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assess students’ instructional, linguistic, and acoustic needs in the classroom environment to optimize access to instruction.
- Maintain contact with local school district representatives and parents.
- Provide and coordinate specialized instruction through daily lessons, reflective of students’ IEPs.
- Use auditory training techniques to help students improve listening skills and speech comprehension.
- Consult with classroom teachers, speech teachers and parents to coordinate programs and services.
- Coordinate supplementary materials, education aids and hearing support devices to facilitate maximum participation in all classroom activities and transference of learning to the student’s life outside of school.
- Provide instruction in the development and maintenance of skills as indicated in the IEP; academic skills, daily living skills, communication skills, social/emotional skills and abilities.
- Collaborate with Individual Education Plan (IEP) team in developing student IEP’s.
- Attend IEP meetings and required staff meetings.
- Conduct and interpret functional hearing assessments and complete written reports.
- Compile and analyze data on student progress to determine intervention, instructional and strategic decisions, and complete all required documentation.
- Use technology to communicate and to enhance student learning.
- Provide in-service training to staff and parents regarding characteristics and implications of hearing loss.
- Participate in parent conferences and engage in communication with districts as appropriate.
- Monitor students’ audiological needs. Provide students with access to information on Deaf culture and current issues impacting the Deaf and hard of hearing community.
- Teach self-advocacy skills and encourage students to identify and communicate their needs ina school setting.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- New York State Certification as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
- Up-to-date knowledge of current research-based “best practices” in teaching students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Thorough understanding and application of technical and assistive devices available to support students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Proficiency across all aspects of the communication continuum, oral/aural to ASL.
- Dual certification in Special education preferred.
- Experience in planning and delivering engaging and relevant lessons to students who are deaf or hard of hearing preferred.
- Understanding of the continuum services for Students with Disabilities, including spectrum disorders preferred.
- Understanding of New York State curriculum (K-12) preferred.
