The City of Chandler Public Works & Utilities Department is currently seeking qualified individuals interested in joining our team as a Water Quality Senior Technician. This is a regular, full-time position with benefits. The position will have the option to work 5/8's or 4/10's.

Who we are
Chandler was the first city in Arizona to receive accreditation of our water and wastewater operations by the American Public Works Association, the toughest accreditation to achieve in the industry. The Utilities Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's water, wastewater and reclaimed water infrastructure. The Utilities team maintains and operates one water, one brine reduction and three wastewater facilities. We treat over 64 million gallons of fresh water and 30 million gallons of treated water per day from our four primary water sources: Salt River, Verde River, Colorado River and access to 31 wells of ground water supply. We also use advanced treatment processes to convert over 32 million gallons of wastewater into A+ reclaimed water to meet irrigation and industrial demands. Service is provided to the City of Chandler residential, commercial, and industrial users by a network of 1,224 miles of active water mains, 942 miles of active sewer mains, and 92 miles of reclaimed water mains.

Who we are looking for
Our new team member will have a passion for customer service, team work, and collaboration. We are looking for someone to perform a variety of technical duties associated with protection of the water distribution system including implementation of the City’s cross connection control program, collection of drinking water samples for regulatory compliance and operation process control purposes, responds to customer service calls regarding water quality issues, and verification of proper disinfection and flushing of new water lines.

Essential Duties
1. Performs potable water sampling using proper preservation techniques; documents field tests in accordance with requirements; analyzes water field samples to determine pH, conductivity, chlorine residuals, temperature and other field test parameters.
2. Responds to and tracks customer complaints and schedules field visits, as required.
3. Uses software, data logs and spreadsheets to record and maintain compliance information, including compliance documentation; maintains chain of custody where required.
4. Performs installation, testing and repair of backflow assemblies; flushes water lines to upgrade quality and maintains and calibrates field testing equipment.
5. Conducts annual cross connection inspections; notifies facilities of non-compliance and corrective action required.

Minimum qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency supplemented by one year of college or technical training courses; and
  • Three (3) years’ experience with physical or chemical testing, water treatment, water distribution system, sewer system maintenance or directly related field;
  • ADEQ Grade II Water Treatment Plant Operator’s and/or Water Distribution Certificate; and
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the Cross Connection Specialist Certification within one (1) year of hire or promotion date; and
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification within one (1) year of hire or promotion date; and
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License with acceptable driving record; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

This is a regular full-time position, subject to a six (6) month probationary period. A register of qualified candidates will be active for four (4) months should another position become available.

The City of Chandler will conduct a pre-employment driving record check as a condition of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results. All applicants hired will be required to be fingerprinted with successful results as a condition of continued employment.
