Position: Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee
Department: Water Treatment
Reports to: Water Treatment Superintendent
Status: Full-time, Classified, Non-Exempt
Pay Grade: L-6 ($22.3653 - $30.2590)
Normal Working Hours: Swing Shift which may include 6:00 am-2:00 pm, 2:00 pm-10:00 pm, and/or 10:00 pm-6:00 am, variable shifts and days. (Subject to emergency call-outs)

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Water Treatment Plant Superintendent, will be responsible for learning plant operations. The candidate will also be responsible for obtaining a Water Supply Class 1 state license within two (2) years of service. Upon receipt of license (and with at least one (1) year of employment), candidate will become Operator I.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The plant operates 24/7; overtime is required as well as possibly working 6-7 day per week.
  • Must be able to learn and pass an Ohio EPA wet chemistry lab certification.
  • Learns all aspects of each shift of operations and ability to work all shifts.
  • Works cooperatively with co-workers, supervisors, and other city departments to accomplish tasks and goals.
  • Conveys information as appropriate with operations and maintenance staff. Logs all shift activities in log books.
  • Answers phones for after hour emergencies and dispatch appropriate departments per their call out procedures.
  • Participates in the maintenance and repair of equipment as instructed by superintendent or maintenance staff. Check all areas of the plant during shift to inspect equipment.
  • Enters confined spaces of underground tanks for cleaning and maintenance as required.
  • Maintains the buildings and grounds of the water treatment plant, well fields, and water towers as directed by the plant superintendent (mowing, weed eating, trimming, painting, etc.).
  • Learns to monitor SCADA for the plant, wells, water towers and lift stations and acts to investigate issues that may arise.
  • Collects water samples in the distribution system.
  • Maintains assigned work areas in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Learns how to maintain records and prepare required reports.
  • Learns to interpret the data on plant records in order to properly operate the water plant.
  • Learns to make minor adjustments to plant equipment and communicate any possible changes to licensed operators for verification.
  • Learns to inspect water wells for proper heat in the building, water table levels, pump operations and building condition.
  • Follows all rules from the Ohio EPA to ensure safe drinking water.
  • Must be able to pass a State of Ohio Water Supply License test. Upon receiving the license (with at least one (1) year of service), will be promoted to Operator I.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Mechanical aptitude to make minor equipment repairs.
  • Some understanding of chemistry and math.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • English Language both oral and written
  • Ability to obtain a Water Supply License within two (2) years of employment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, heights and with hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to lift 50-100 lbs. and load chemical drums on a dolly weighing up to 740 lbs.
  • Ability to operate power and hand tools and other equipment.
  • Ability to work all holidays and multiple days in a row.
  • Ability to obtain EPA wet chemistry lab certificate and possibly microbiological certificate
  • Ability to answer the telephone and to gather information about people, places, and things.
  • Skill in the use of a personal computer with proficiency in e-mail and Microsoft Office software to include Word and Excel.

Minimum Qualifications for Employment:

To be eligible for consideration, a candidate must meet or exceed all of the minimum qualifications for employment. Those candidates who do not possess the minimum qualifications will not be considered for employment.

  • Possession of a high school diploma or documentation of successfully passing the General Education Development (GED) test or a statement of high school equivalence shall be accepted in lieu of a high school diploma.
  • Completion of a vocational training program in the field of application may be accepted in lieu of a high school diploma.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the State of Ohio and to remain insurable under the city’s vehicle insurance policy and have an acceptable driving record as deemed by the City of Wadsworth.
  • The employee hired into this classification will be required to successfully pass the State of Ohio EPA examination for a Water Supply Operator within two (2) years of employment.

Special Information:

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check, employment reference checks, a physical examination and a pre-employment drug screen. The final applicant will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to the appointment to test for illegal drug use. An applicant with a positive test will not be appointed to the position.
