The New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country with a mission of combating municipal corruption. It serves the people of New York City by acting as an independent and nonpartisan watchdog for New York City government, City agencies, and City employees, vendors with City contracts, individuals and entities that receive City funds.

The Law Enforcement Technology Unit is seeking a full-time Confidential Investigator. The selected candidate will be expected to support a range of confidential investigations by retrieving, reviewing and examining digital evidence from electronic devices such as laptops, desktop computers, servers, mobile devices, tablets and CCTV systems. In addition, the candidate will also be expected to establish and preserve the chain of custody of digital evidence, logging and securing property, assisting with computer related search warrants, and participating with a team of investigators and/or consultants to complete investigation activity.

If selected, the candidate will be fingerprinted and undergo a background investigation. In addition for positions that have a law enforcement and/or investigative function, the candidate's consumer credit history will be reviewed during the background investigation, and as otherwise permitted by NYC Administrative Code § 8-107(24)(b)(2)(A).

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of satisfactory full-time experience in an industrial or governmental agency in the field of investigation, auditing, law enforcement, security, inspections, or in a major operational area of the agency in which the appointment is to be made; or

2.A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or

3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above.

Preferred Skills

1. Baccalaureate degree (preferably in Forensic Computing, Computer Science or Computer Security) from an accredited college.
2. At least two (2) years' experience in a digital forensics field or two years of equivalent study in forensic computing.
3. Knowledge of digital forensic methodologies, and best practices.
4. Able to dissemble, configure, and troubleshoot computer hardware.
5. Strong attention to detail and high concern for data accuracy.
6. Strong communication skills and an ability to testify to findings in Grand Jury and Trial proceedings.
7. Excellent organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and coordinate large number of separate digital investigations.
8. Experience with forensic tools, such as EnCase, X-Ways, Axiom, FTK, and Cellebrite [Physical Analyzer, UFED 4PC,].
9. Experience conducting forensic imaging and examinations of computer systems, digital media, network devices, and mobile devices.
10. Experience conducting CCTV and DVR extractions.
11. Must be able to analyze and forensically preserve information from social networking profiles and websites.
12. Strong understanding of Operating Systems such as Windows and MacOS. Linux and UNIX experience is a plus.
13. Strong understanding of ESI hardware such as laptops, desktops, servers, mobile devices and tablets.
