JOB TITLE: Director of Youth Outreach & Discipleship

Amity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC

ROLE
The newly created part-time position of Director of Youth Outreach & Discipleship will guide the congregation in reaching out, welcoming, and discipling children and youth in our community. By seeking new opportunities for outreach and by deepening the relationships already in place within the congregation and Amity’s existing community partnerships, the Director of Youth Outreach & Discipleship is invited to envision and establish a new ministry with children and youth through Amity Church. Seeking to create a safe, welcoming, and life-giving place for young people and their families to experience Christ’s love and grow in discipleship, we hope this new ministry will grow into a creative, engaging, and vibrant ministry that reflects the vibrant community that Amity church calls home.

How will this be accomplished?

• Encouraging the congregation to focus outward as a ministry leader
• Using flexible and creative strategy to engage community members and deepen relationships
• Developing a ministry that is responsive to the needs and gifts of the families we connect with and serve (asking first “What do they need/bring?”)
• Providing opportunities for children and youth to learn, serve, grow, worship, and celebrate together, with their families, and within the community of the broader congregation.

• Focus of this role will include outreach, education, and engagement of children and youth (birth to 18) and their families

Amity Presbyterian Church is a big-hearted, small congregation experiencing the growth of holy transformation and answering Jesus’ call to love and serve in big, beautiful ways. Situated in one of the most diverse, densely-populated, and rapidly changing areas of Charlotte, our neighborhood is full of families of all shapes, sizes, cultures, and stories- which means it’s full of opportunities for relational ministry. In becoming a Christ-focused neighborhood center for our East Charlotte neighbors, Amity is a place where people from all walks of life can participate in a wide variety of programs that serve spiritual, physical, social, creative, and educational needs. We are proud of the strong partnerships and community programming that are carried out 7 days a week on the church campus, including 75-100 children who come to Amity every week for music education and a community martial arts class through our ministry partners.

The Director of Youth Outreach & Discipleship will be able to build on that solid foundation to strengthen the engagement between the congregation and community members. It is our fierce hope to welcome more of these neighbors into the active Christian fellowship of Amity Church, and we recognize that focusing deeply on youth outreach and discipleship is an essential part of that.
The person who serves in this role must be someone desiring to take a leadership role in an established church that is full of FIRSTS as we continue to follow Christ’s call with courage and hope.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Outreach and Partnerships

• Be a liaison between the church and families with children and youth in the local community
• Utilize social media, relationships, advertising outlets, and other platforms to promote church visibility and opportunities to engage in church events and activities
• Work in conjunction with the pastor to establish, expand, and maintain strategic partnerships to connect and serve youth, families, and the local community with the church
• Become an integral component of the Community Connections ministry team

Discipleship and Leadership

• Be present and engaged in worship and discipleship on Sunday mornings
• Work alongside the pastor to plan and lead programs and activities for children and youth to engage in bible study, fellowship, spiritual formation, etc. to deepen their faith and have fun
• Identify opportunities to welcome families to more deeply engage in the life of the congregation and make introduction to appropriate ministry teams
• Invite and encourage congregation members and ministry teams to support, serve, and lead in youth ministry

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

For the role of Director of Youth Outreach & Discipleship, we are seeking:
A Christian who…

• Is able to express and illustrate their faith in Christ in a way that invites others to learn and grow as disciples
• Has experience working with children and youth in the context of Christian faith, or who can adequately express their desire to grow and develop this type of ministry.
• Serves with an open heart and mind-- loving ALL people.
• Values cultural inclusion and competency, with experience and comfort working in multicultural environments
• Is fully welcoming of people with diverse gender identities, sexual orientations, cultures, races, socio-economic situations, and religions.
• Is a self-starter; able to imagine, plan, and implement with appropriate collaboration and support from others.
• Is friendly and welcoming, with the ability to connect with children and youth and their families.
• Has a passion for outreach and community organizing in order to build and deepen relationships with our neighbors.
• Has communication skills appropriate to the role, including: 1) Comfort creating publicity and content for church social media 2) Proficiency with technology (and a willingness to learn) 3) Ability to engage in clear oral and written communication
• Can pass criminal background check and drug screening upon hiring in compliance with Amity’s child- safety policies.

DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED

• Second language proficiency
• Comfortable with or interested in exploring opportunities for Sunday worship leadership

TIME COMMITMENT

• 15 hours per week
• Hours worked must include Sunday morning
• Weekly hours may be arranged to allow for greatest interaction between the Director of Youth Outreach & Discipleship and the community. These may include a combination of afterschool, weekday, evening, or weekend hours, and may vary significantly depending on the time of year or church season.
• Amity commits to flexibility in accommodating a candidate’s other employment schedules as much as possible.

COMPENSATION

• $15,000-16,800 per year
• Paid vacation and sick days: to be negotiated
