About Cantigny Park
Located in Wheaton, Illinois, Cantigny Park is Col. Robert R. McCormick’s 500-acre estate, which encompasses a park, formal gardens, a museum dedicated to the 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, and a 27-hole public golf facility. Cantigny welcomes over 400,000 visitors each year to enjoy its education and recreational amenities and public and private events.
Cantigny’s gardens are developed for public enjoyment and education with a mix of woody plants, herbaceous perennial, and seasonal collections. Annual and seasonal displays correspond to organization-wide themes and initiatives, special events, and public holidays. For instance, the 2022 theme of “Alebrijes: Creatures of a Dream World” celebrated 49 site-specific sculptures created by artists from Mexico City and installed throughout the park. In partnership, the garden included displays of plants native to Mexico and hosted programs inspired by Mexican culture.
Cantigny’s formal garden spaces include a rose garden; seasonal display gardens for annual and perennial flowering plants, woody plant collections, a hosta garden, a rock and gravel garden, a fountain display garden, a prairie view garden, pond garden, shade garden collections, a logarium, and an idea garden. All gardens and collections are supported by five (5) on-site production greenhouses and nursery areas, which total approximately 18,000 sf.
Opportunity: Garden Technician
Performs a variety of functions related primarily to the installation and care of the annual flower and perennial gardens; other duties will be performed relating to the general development and care of the Cantigny Park, Gardens and Golf Course. This is a seasonal (3-8 month), full-time (i.e., 40 hours/week) position. The position will sometimes require to work some weekend and holidays.
Requirements
Essential Functions
- Assists in the planting and horticultural maintenance of the annual flower and perennial gardens, including the preparation of the gardens.
- Operates and maintains small equipment such as roto-tillers, garden edging tools, etc.
- Provides for personal safety in the workplace by attending and completing all required safety training. Knowing and following existing safety rules including the applicable use of personal protection equipment, the proper operation of tools/machinery and proper handling of hazardous materials, and reporting any unsafe conditions to respective supervisor.
- Reports any problems to the Horticulturist in charge.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Working Conditions:
This is a Full-Time position. Work is typically outdoors, rain or shine, throughout the growing season. This includes sometimes working in extreme heat and cold temperatures. The work can be physically demanding and sometimes includes heavy lifting, repetitive motion, and long periods of standing/walking. Proper safety training and gear must always be used due to the nature and environment of the work. This includes wearing proper PPE and completing safety trainings on a pre-determined schedule. Some office work is generally required as well
Minimum Qualifications:
Skills:
- Must be able to operate all small grounds equipment.
- Is able to communicate with the Horticulturist in charge or with other co-workers to complete instructions as given.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule based on operational needs and weather delays.
- Physically able to lift and maneuver 50 lbs. Work in all types of terrain and all types of weather
- Pass a drug screening and background check
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position during shift or position self to work kneeling for up to 8 hours per day
- Ability to perform heavy manual and semi-skilled tasks for extended periods of time.
- Must be a team player with a willingness to learn
