Position Overview

This position is located at the Headquarters Local & State History Department and is responsible for providing customer assistance at multiple service points as assigned. Independent judgment is necessary in assisting customers with information and materials selection. Assists customers with information and technology resources, particularly local history, genealogy and family history resources.

Examples of Duties

  • Staffs a public services point. Performs proactive reference at the service desk
  • Performs basic troubleshooting of library equipment and trains others in the use of resources and equipment
  • Under general supervision, may participate in collection maintenance, including weeding and discarding items. May prepare, assist with and/or present Local and State History and genealogy programs
  • May participate in publicity and marketing of library resources and events. May assist in building and maintaining branch displays of library materials
  • May serve as a working member of councils and committees as assigned
  • May assist in compilation and reporting of statistics

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and two (2) years of relevant public library experience or progressive customer relations experience in the public sector; or graduation from an accredited two-year college or technical school and four (4) years of relevant public library experience or progressive customer relations experience in the public sector; or graduation from high school and six (6) years of relevant public library experience or progressive customer relations experience in the public sector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.


Negative drug screen and background check are required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of library procedures, collection management, library systems and services
  • Knowledge of readers’ advisory methods and sources
  • Ability to initiate basic troubleshooting procedures on a variety of computers, printers, copiers, and fax machines
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with co-workers and general public
  • Ability and knowledge to provide basic library information services and other customer assistance
  • Ability to instruct customers on use of equipment to include photocopiers, fax, Venda card dispenser, public computer reservation software, and self-checkout as needed and where applicable
  • Proficiency in searching the online public catalog. Ability to use computers, competently manipulate keyboard and spell accurately
