Head of Compliance XL Re Europe

Location : Dublin (in hybrid working mode)

An exciting opportunity has become available to join AXA XL’s compliance team. AXA XL is a large Division within AXA which is one of the biggest (re)insurers globally. AXA XL has a significant international reinsurer domiciled in Ireland that requires a Head of Compliance (PCF 12). Reporting to the Head of Compliance for Reinsurance, this role will be responsible for Compliance in XL Re Europe and have the support of branch staff and centres of excellence including Financial Crime, Policy and Monitoring. This role will be based in Ireland with flexible (smart) working and a modest amount of travel.

Summary of Role

  • To be responsible for providing operational compliance and CBI interaction for the Company’s operations. To facilitate the Company’s business strategy, help mitigate business threats and keep the Company’s operations in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements.
  • To draft and execute the XL Re Europe Annual Compliance Risk assessment and Plan. Collaborate with Legal, Risk, HR and the broader Compliance team including the Centres of Excellence as required.
  • Possess strong knowledge of CBI requirements for Reinsurers and be the PCF 12 role holder.

What will your essential responsibilities include?

  • To assess and manage compliance and regulatory risk within the Company working closely with the broader Compliance team, legal and executive management.
  • Whilst business leaders are accountable for managing compliance risks relevant to their business, the Compliance team provides compliance risk analysis/advice to them and ensures challenge and independent monitoring and oversight.
  • Provide appropriate and timely reporting on compliance and regulatory issues to both executive management and the Board/committees.
  • Collaborate with other Compliance colleagues to help deliver effective compliance training and communication to all employees in the Region.
  • Ensure an understanding of Company strategy to enable proactive and risk-based compliance advice to facilitate business opportunities whilst always ensuring that the interests of XL Re Europe are safeguarded.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Risk Management, Internal Audit, HR and Legal teams to coordinate monitoring, assurance and transactional advice to the business.
  • Keep pace with changes to legislation, regulations and market practice in the relevant jurisdictions in which the company operates.

We’re looking for someone who has these qualifications and skills:


  • Significant experience in a senior compliance leadership role in (re)insurance
  • A comprehensive understanding of compliance, regulatory and financial crime issues
  • Experience dealing with regulatory authorities at a senior level
  • Ability to apply regulatory and compliance requirements to the business in an efficient and business friendly manner
  • A creative problem-solver able to work with the business to enable solutions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with colleagues to drive and embed a culture of compliance in the region
  • Outstanding judgment with a willingness to exercise it and be assertive as necessary
  • An ability to communicate at all levels in the organization and lead a department with confidence and clarity
