Health Technician - GS-0640-06 - Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD)


Downtown San Diego is located on San Diego Bay. Balboa Park encompasses several mesas and canyons to the northeast, surrounded by older, dense urban communities including Hillcrest and North Park. To the east and southeast lie City Heights, the College Area, and Southeast San Diego. To the north lies Mission Valley and Interstate 8. The communities north of the valley and freeway, and south of Marine Corps Air Station Mirmar, include Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Tierrasanta, and Navajo. Stretching north from Miramar are the northern suburbs of Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, and Ranch Bernado. The far northeast portion of the city encompasses Lake Hodges and the San Pasqual Valley, which holds an agricultural preserve. Carmel Valley and Del Mar Heights occupy the northwest corner of the city. To their south are Torrey Pines State Reserve and the business center of the Golden Triangle. Further south are the beach and coastal communities of La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach. Pont Loma occupies the peninsula across San Dego Bay from downtown. The communities of South San Diego (an Enclave), such as San Ysidro and Otay Mesa, are located next to the Mexico-United States border and are physically separated from the rest of the city by the cities of National City and Chula Vista. A narrow strip of land at the bottom of San Diego Bay connects these southern neighborhoods with the rest of the city.

Responsibilities:

  • Answers clinic telephones, greets patients, answers patient's questions about appointment time, TRICARE benefits, waiting times, clinic services and other general questions not related to diagnosis or treatment.
  • Enter and retrieves data from CHCS, AHLTA, ADS, and other appropriate computer systems as needed for patient reception, proper patient identification, and eligibility status, and updates and confirms patient information. Transcribes physician orders per Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
  • Schedules all categories of appointments for patients who call or walk in for an appointment; makes follow-up contact with all patients who do not show for scheduled appointments in accordance with clinic policy. Reschedules missed appointments as needed.
  • Prepares and activates the master appointment schedule for the clinic according to the guidelines dictated in the procedure manual, making changes as needed.
  • Prepares various schedules for the clinic. Ensures telephone contact with patients regarding their appointments or care and treatment, according to clinic policy.
  • Acknowledges and receives patient request for medication refills and generates T-Con to provider.
  • Assists the charge nurse with various administrative duties as directed including, but not limited to, photo copying, typing of Standard Operating Procedures, memorandums, laboratory and radiological results retrieval and Customer Service administrative processing.
  • Acts as an advocate for providing a safe clinic environment. Follows established safety practices by proper use and storage of equipment. Reports any malfunctioning of equipment for repair and any safety hazards to the departmental Safety Petty Officer. Notifies appropriate supervisor for all identified safety hazards or physical security risks.
  • Participates in clinic Quality Assessment and Improvement by identifying problems and assisting in formulating plan of action, assessing results and doing follow-up.
  • Complies with Infection control guidelines and practices universal precautions. Maintains clean, professional environment.
  • Assists in the orientation of new nursing, medical and clerical personnel in the location of files and the requirement of medical record keeping.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient related issues and intervenes to protect same. Aware of and follows all HIPAA guidelines set by the command.
  • Promotes good inter-personal and inter-intra departmental relationships.

Clinical Duties:

  • Administers topical medications. Proper dosage must be ordered and verified by licensed provider per clinic SOP. Reports and records any reaction to medication and/or treatment.


Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Must be a US Citizen


Must have current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
