BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.
Organizational Overview
The National Synchrotron Light Source is a state-of-the-art, medium-energy (3-billion-electron-volt, or GeV) electron storage ring that produces x-rays up to 10,000 times brighter than the NSLS. The mission of the National Synchrotron Light Source is to provide extremely bright x-rays for basic and applied research in biology and medicine, materials and chemical sciences, geosciences and environmental sciences, and nanoscience. To support this program, the NSLSII must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate and focus electron and X-ray beams. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the NSLSII scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The NSLSII supports an international user community of over 2,200 researchers from 400 universities. The NSLSII performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.
Position Description
The Mechanical Operations group is responsible for the assembly, installation, maintenance, and repairs of NSLS-II beam line front ends and magnets as well as machining for the Accelerator and Photon Divisions. Currently there is an opening for a Mechanical Technician within this group.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Under general technical direction, preforms a wide variety of skilled technical assignments in support of the scientific and engineering staff. Including manufacturing prototype parts; assembling, testing, and installing components and systems; troubleshooting and repairing systems and assemblies.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work in a team environment and independently.
- Must have a desire to learn new technologies.
- Work with scientists, engineers, and technical team to install, maintain and upgrade mechanical systems.
- Must be able to successfully complete periodic training and pass testing on BNL environmental, health and safety rules.
- Responsible for following all safety requirements and keeping refresher compliance training up to date.
Position Requirements

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
- a BS degree in a technical field or;
- a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 4 years experience or;
- a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 5 years relevant work experience or;
- 6 years relevant work experience.
- Ability to produce machined parts by programming, setting up and operating computer numerical control (CNC) machines including mills and lathes.
- Experience with Master Cam software for mill and turning.
- Ability to input data manually at CNC control.
- Ability to work from mechanical drawing, schematics, and verbal instructions.
- Experience working with power tools for both assembly and disassembly of equipment.
- Experience with all aspects of manual mechanical fabrication techniques including operating lathes, Milling machines and drill presses as well as sheet metal fabrication.
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
- Must be committed to working safely under strict guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to work with other groups/settings such as working with the Masons, riggers, plumbers, etc, either in the field , accelerator tunnel or shop setting.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience with magnets, ultra -high vacuum assembly techniques
- Experience with HAAS and centroid controls.
- Experience with software such as auto Cad inventor.
- Knowledge of metrology and use of precision inspection tools.
- Knowledge of pipe fitting, tube bending, soldering and brazing.
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
- Will receive periodic training for environmental, health and safety rules.
- Able to lift more than 30 LBS on a regular basis.
- Ability to work on ladders and scaffolds.
- Ability to qualify as a material handler to operate hoists and preform basic rigging tasks.
- Must have dexterity to work in ergonometric challenging spaces.

- Physical coordination and balance
- Hear and understand speech.
- Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes and hearing protection.
OTHER INFORMATION:
- Driver’s license required.
- Overtime may be required during shutdowns and maintenance periods

- The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on their experience
