What you will do:

The Member Services Accounting Manager is responsible for leading, organizing and coordinating all aspects of patron payroll, member distributions, accounting for outside milk, and all accounting and internal controls related to patrons. In addition, the Member Services Accounting Manager role will be charged with supporting additional role definition, process improvements and longer-term growth of the Patron Accounting function. This role will lead the team responsible for the timely and accurate processing of patron payroll, outside milk accounting and payments and member distributions. The Member Services Accounting Manager will work closely with Accounting and Finance as well as Farm Services and individually with our farmer owners. This hands-on position will ensure the completeness and accuracy of all member related transactions, including reviewing and/or recording journal entries as well as reconciling related general ledger accounts during the month end close cycle. The role will be the primary point of contact for patron related accounting during the annual audit processes and will participate in the preparation of Board presentations regarding distributions. A thorough understanding and knowledge of the application of GAAP is a must. The role will support farmer owners and respond to their questions regarding distributions made, including calculation details of those payments. A strong candidate will have a demonstrated track record of working independently and is comfortable working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.


The role will oversee the Milk Accountant who is responsible for processing patron payroll, calculating and payment of member distributions and validating milk receipts by calculating the value of milk based on the components within the milk delivered to TCCA.


Here’s a day in the life:

  • Drive strategy and recommendations for member distributions to Corporate Controller, CFO and Board of Directors.
  • Track member equity distributions and make recommendations for classes of equity with consideration to tax and cash flow.
  • Responsible for forecasting and budgeting of member distributions.
  • Lead, coach and develop Milk Accountant.
  • Partner with Farm Services to provide exceptional and unified service to members and ensure complete and timely member payments and deductions related to farm services.
  • Act as primary point of contact to farmer owners for questions related to patron accounting including monthly milk payments, assignments, advances, distributions, equity, and supply rights.
  • Assist leadership, in support of company objectives, in developing efficiencies in member relation support through commonly asked questions and standardized report development.
  • Support the Corporate Controller in accomplishing the requirements as set by the company which will include ensuring that all accounting entries are timely, accurate, and comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Establish system to monitor supply rights and ensure timely and accurate system updates reflecting transfers of supply rights (ie sales and leases).
  • Lead company training as it relates to Member payments, Supply Rights, other Patron related topics.
  • Participate in the preparation of financial presentations to the Board of Directors (member distributions) and various ad hoc analyses for Senior Management.
  • Develop and implement record retention policy and document management procedures for member documents including digitization strategy.
  • Establish internal controls to ensure timely and accurate system updates reflecting membership structure or name changes, supply rights and filing of business name active with the State.
  • Act as primary liaison with outside legal counsel to resolve various legal issues that affect producer pay and membership.
  • Lead and provide general accounting support for milk receipts, patron payroll and distributions and reconcile related general ledger accounts.
  • Oversee preparation and distribution of monthly milk checks, as well as accurate payments of revolving equity, dividends, and other distributions as directed by the Board of Directors.
  • Support monthly Market Administrator reporting and act as primary liaison for annual milk reporting audit by Market Administrator.
  • Partner with costing team to accurately account for milk purchases and dairy costs as it relates to our products throughout the year and during month end close.
  • Primary point of contact for external auditors for Patron Accounting including preparation of interim and year-end audit work papers.
  • Responsible for member-related tax reporting including issuance of 1099s (1099-PATR, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT and 1099-G) and QBID (Qualified Business Income Deduction).
  • Participate in and support ERP and Milk Payment system (Madcap) initiatives in relation to Patron Accounting or costing.
  • In collaboration with IT, lead customization of Milk Payment system (Madcap) as needed to support company objectives or members.
  • Participate in evaluation and selection of Milk Payment system in partnership with farm services and IT, as needed.
  • Responsible for composing member communications related to patron accounting in partnership with Member Comms and Executive Leadership.
  • Participates in cross-functional projects in support of best-in-class member relations.
  • Exercise internal control and confidentiality over all information processed.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of GAAP, relevant government regulations and current accounting policies and procedures is required.
  • Continuously drive efficiency in process for member payments and Market Administrator reporting.
  • Review and approve journal entries for month end close.
  • Coordinate and manage special projects with other management team members.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Act as a team leader and be able to interact with staff at all levels of the company.
  • Work under pressure, meet deadlines, and be flexible in working on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrate excellent time-management skills with the ability to work independently and meet goals with little supervision.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

· 10+ years of experience as senior accountant or above

· 3-5 years of experience work with cross functional teams, varying levels of an organization, and internal/external customers

· 5 years of people leadership experience.

· Experience working in a Cooperative or dairy industry is a plus.

· Must have strong knowledge of GAAP and fully understand accounting principles.

· Demonstrated ability to work independently and with the highest ethical standards.

· Strong verbal and written communication skills

· Advanced Excel and Word skills and intermediate skills with PPT.

· ERP system knowledge required and experience with D365 a plus.

· Knowledge of federal and state Milk Marketing Orders is preferred.
