Managers lead shifts every week, making sure customers get a fast, accurate, friendly experience every visit. A Shift Manager provides leadership to crew and other managers during a shift to ensure great Quality, Service and Cleanliness to customers.
Shift Managers perform a variety of tasks, which may include planning for each shift, monitoring performance during the shift, taking action to ensure the team is meeting McDonald’s standards, monitoring safety, security, and profitability, and communicating with the next Shift Manager to help prepare him/her to run a great shift, too. Shift Managers may also be responsible for meeting targets during their shifts and for helping their assigned Departments meet their goals.

Partnering with Skills for Chicagoland’s Future and the City Colleges of Chicago, McDonald’s is offering an exciting opportunity for Chicago’s unemployed and underemployed young adults. If you are between 18-26 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED, this is your chance to position yourself for immediate and long-term success at McDonald’s, a global leader in the QSR industry headquartered in Chicago.
Program Overview:
This new opportunity is a joint collaboration between Skills for Chicagoland’s Future Beyond the Diploma program and McDonald’s Archways to Opportunities initiative, focused on Chicago’s young adult job seekers. Program participants will work two years (part-time) at McDonald’s while also attending classes at the City Colleges of Chicago to receive their associate degree. Skills for Chicagoland’s Future will be your guide through the hiring process, as well as provide access to supportive services and mentoring.
McDonald’s is dedicated to investing in their staff and future leaders. Program participants will be provided with financial support to ensure the Associate’s degree is earned at no cost to them. Upon completion of the program, participants are ready for long-term success at McDonald’s and will continue their career path into restaurant management and beyond!
Your McDonald’s Career Path:
Starting as Crew, participants will take the first step in their career journey at McDonald’s. Crew Members gain valuable customer service, operations, and leadership skills, while playing a key role in providing an outstanding experience for our customers. As Crew, participants learn food preparation and cooking techniques on a wide range of restaurant equipment and tools, produce orders to a consistently high standard, and much more!
After achieving success as a Crew, over the course of 18 – 24 months, participants will be guided along a defined career path, with the potential of performance based promotions and experiences leading to roles as a Shift Lead/Manager, and Department Manager and even General Manager. McDonald's can take you anywhere, and give you the benefits you need for your life while doing so.
Attending the City Colleges of Chicago:
Participants will be enrolled in an Associate’s Degree program focused on retail/restaurant management, attending 6-12 credit-hours of classes per semester over the duration of the two-year program. Based on McDonald’s investment in participants, cohort members will attend CCC with no out of pocket costs for the duration of the program.

To participate, all interested individuals must apply through Skills for Chicagoland’s Future (Skills). Skills will then guide qualified applicants through the various enrollment and application processes.
Program Success:
Program participants will receive support and resources throughout the program from mentors and guidance staff. Additionally, program participants will be interacting with each other and operating as a cohort, providing peer relationships and teambuilding.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma/GED
- City of Chicago resident
- Qualified to pursue a City Colleges of Chicago, associate degree program
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holidays
