Merced College is a midsized community college located in California’s Central Valley. Merced College is recruiting for a full-time, Disabled Students Program & Services (DSPS) Student Services Assistant. General Description:

Under general supervision, provides student services, performs technical functions in the area to which assigned, and does related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Accepts and evaluates applications of potential program participants
  • Interviews potential participants and completes preliminary determination of eligibility to participate in program involved
  • Assists with the college testing program and monitoring of students in area of responsibility
  • Coordinates area of specialty with community, state and federal agencies
  • Participates in workshops, orientations, and in-service training
  • Assists students by providing information regarding the types of services available
  • Gathers and compiles data regarding needs and status of students
  • Assists students with applications and checks applications for accuracy and completeness
  • Keeps books and records of monies received and expended in preparation for audits by funding agencies
  • Coordinates with instructional departments and reviews students' status
  • Provides a variety of administrative relief for program administration
  • Assists in compilation and preparation of reports
  • Writes letters and follows through on details
  • Assists with budget preparation and securing of funding from outside agencies
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Learn and apply the principles of individual appraisal including interview techniques
  • Learn, communicate and apply pertinent laws, rules and regulations
  • Compile and analyze data
  • Complete forms necessary for making application for funds and/or services
  • Maintain complex records requiring effective accountability and accurate controls
  • Prepare reports
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties
  • Make comparisons and computations quickly and accurately
  • Deal with the public effectively
  • Assigns work, trains, and/or supervises student workers
  • Work cooperatively with others
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students

Typical Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma OR GED AND one (1) year of applicable experience OR
  • The equivalent education and experience
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment with some travel to different sites; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.

Interview Information:

Those applicants deemed highly qualified for the position will be invited to appear for oral interviews before a screening committee. A limited number of candidates will be invited to interviews. Interviews may be scheduled onsite or via Zoom. Applicants are required to ensure access to the necessary technology to participate in a Zoom interview and will be responsible for their travel expenses, if necessary.

Cost is $12.00/month for 10 months/year. There is no cost during June and July. $12.00 covers the following as long as the members use Plan providers:

  • Medical (Anthem Blue Cross):$100 deductible for each family member or $300 deductible per family paid by employee each calendar year.100% coverage after deductible is paid (except for emergency room visits which cost $100 unless the person is admitted to the hospital).
